Rupp Seeds announces its game plan entering 2021
The top question we get from
customers is " what's new for this
year? " Every season Rupp Seeds'
product development team evaluates
hundreds of varieties. Through our
on-farm testing, grower co-operator
trials and vendor trials throughout
the Midwest, we can determine
which varieties will perform best for
growers, with observations based on
improved plant health through disease
resistance, greater productivity, better
flavor, or a unique appearance.
This season's efforts have resulted in
over 30 new products being added to
our lineup including: corn, peppers,
tomatoes, pumpkins and squash.
The new pumpkins and squash have
been developed by our breeding
department and are Rupp exclusives.
Fool's Gold (RPX 6229) is an early
maturing (90 days), 11-12-pound
pumpkin with an upright fruit shape. Its
unique tan color is great for the niche
market. Our trial cooperators say, " It
is definitely different enough that it
catches people's eye and looks good in
an orange and white pumpkin mix. "
Speaking of white pumpkins, White
Gold (RPX 6927) will mix nicely with
Fool's Gold and orange pumpkins, too.
The 7.5-inch wide by 8.75-inch tall fruit
UGLY DUMPLING
have nice ribbing and a classic pumpkin
shape. White Gold has intermediate
resistance to powdery mildew.
One of two new, small pumpkins for
2021 is Fort Knox (RPX 6875). This
5-pound round pumpkin is very dark
orange. It has an extra thick handle
that is very securely attached making
it a good choice for agritourism and
school trips.
Yosemite (RPX 6880) is the other
new small pumpkin. The fruit are a
deep red/orange color and are taller
than they are wide, with a dark green,
4-inch-long handle.
EDUCATION
Ugly Dumpling winter squash
is a new Rupp exclusive. While its
" dirty brown " exterior may not be
what consumers are used to seeing,
its true beauty is on the inside. Ugly
Dumpling is one of the best tasting
winter squash varieties you will ever
eat. Even though you can stuff it and
use it in all of your favorite recipes,
it really only needs a little butter and
salt. It can be baked, or it cooks really
fast in the microwave. The unique
coloring of Ugly Dumpling also makes
it a great option for fall decoration.
Xanadu is a new, 74-75 day bicolor

elevated seedling vigor, eating quality,

YOSEMITE
Cadence XR is a full season (78day)
high eating quality sweet corn
hybrid with ideal ear size for roadside
markets. This IFSI variety has an
attractive husk package with good
flag leaves which will make a nice
presentation at your stand. Cadence
XR offers resistance to common rust.
Tarpon is a main-season bell
pepper hybrid, from Seminis, with
X10R technology and intermediate
resistance to phytophthora blight for
the northeast and Midwest United
States and eastern Canada. It has a
compact plant and produces dark
green, smooth blocky fruit. Tarpon
has an improved length to diameter
