SEED SHOWCASE
Rispens Seeds shares it 2021 product lineup
As we enter our 93rd year as a familyowned
business, we at Rispens Seeds Inc.
are excited to offer over 26 new vegetable
varieties from 16 of the world's most elite
seed producers for the 2021 growing
season. These new varieties continue
to bring forward improved genetics
providing increased disease resistance and
more product diversity for those looking
to offer the best to their customers.
Tribute is a new medium dark green
zucchini with intermediate resistance to
powdery mildew, papaya ring spot virus,
watermelon mosaic virus and zucchini
yellows mosaic virus. Its plant type is
open and upright allowing for easy
harvest of straight and cylindrical fruit
with flecks that can camouflage scratches
where soils are more rough. Tribute is a
good choice for high yield potential in
the main growing season.
Part of series of new red round
tomatoes with exceptional disease
resistance, Myrtle is a main season
red round hybrid with good fruit
quality and extra-large fruit size
perfect for the vine-ripe market. The
excellent disease resistance package
helps provide strong vigor and a long
harvest window. Myrtle can be pruned
minimally or not at all to maximize
performance potential. The fruit shape
is deep oblate on a determinate plant.
Fruit size ranges from 8.8 to 10.6 ounces
with a relative maturity of 77-82 days,
slightly earlier than Saybrook which is
another new release showing very strong
disease resistance.
The trend of improving disease
resistance in bell pepper continuous
with Nitro S10. It is a high-quality, midmaturing
hybrid suited for place pack
due to high-quality fruit with good
firmness and uniformity. It is adapted
to summer production in the Northeast
NITRO S10
and suited for production where
bacterial leaf spot is a concern. The
fruit have good size uniformity and are
smooth, firm, blocky, glossy dark green
and mature to red color.
Nitro S10 benefits from a nutritional
management program that helps build a
productive plant. It has high resistance
to tobacco mosaic virus (V:0) and
intermediate resistance to phytophthora
blight, tomato spotted wilt virus and
bacterial leaf spot races 0-10.
Sweet corn is often the foundation of
many vegetable growers' operation and
there are several new hybrids available
in 2021 to choose from. Advancements
continue to be made in the areas of
disease resistance and eating quality.
For growers familiar with the very
popular 76-day bicolor augmented
supersweet Nirvana, Xanadu is a
Nirvana type that adds high resistance
to common rust (Ps), northern corn leaf
blight and maize dwarf mosaic virus.
Like Nirvana, Xanadu combines top
shelf eating quality with large ear size
and improved seed quality compared to
many other hybrids with outstanding
eating quality.
Xanadu also picks very clean and
easily with short shank length. Because
of its especially tender kernels, Xanadu
XANADU
is probably best suited for hand picking
as opposed to machine harvest. Those
that grow white sweet corn may find
Eden RMN3 of interest, as it is basically
a white version of Xanadu.
Crave is a new 77-day bicolor
supersweet with characteristics that
make it suitable as a dual-purpose corn
for farm markets or wholesale shipping.
The eating quality is quite adequate for
farm markets yet not too tender for
machine harvest. Its short shank makes
it easy to pick and pack, and the bullet
shaped ears have beautiful kernel color
contrast for a very appealing look. No
disease resistance is claimed so under
certain conditions a well-timed fungicide
application may be warranted.
Another dual-purpose corn candidate
is Cadence XR, a full season (78 days)
high eating quality supersweet with ideal
ear size for roadside markets yet also
suitable for packing. Cadence XR has an
attractive husk package with good flag
leaves and resistance to Common rust
(RpG). In our trials we've noted Cadence
XR to perform well through tough
growing conditions.
The specialty fall decorative market
continues to grow, which makes Baby
Moon pumpkin a good option to add
to you fall color mix. Baby Moon
MYRTLE
has a bright white rind that contrasts
very well against a nice dark green
true pumpkin handle. From a strong
plant, the fruit are uniform, round and
average 7 to 9 pounds.
Many new specialty types have
emerged in recent years and are too
numerous to mention, so be sure to
ask your sales representative about the
growing variety of shapes, sizes and
colors now available in pumpkins and
squash for the fall market.
Rispens Seeds customers can expect to
see these new varieties, among others, in
their 2021 catalog which should arrive in
mid- to late November. VGN
