Sakata Seed America lines up full array of products
A full line of lettuce, including
romaine, iceberg and loose leaf is on tap
from Sakata Seed America.
Earlier this year, Sakata Seed America
announced the acquisition of Vanguard
Seed, a prominent lettuce company based
in the Salinas Valley. Sakata now offers a
full lettuce portfolio for both indoor and
outdoor markets. Some highlights of this
program include top iceberg varieties, such
as Meridian: the first iceberg to market
with fusarium race 1 tolerance and the best
tolerance available in the category.
In addition, Cielo Verde is the industry
standard for green leaf whole head
production and matches the maturity of
red leaf cultivar, Kremlin, also available
from Sakata. Red Tide, another red leaf
variety, is the industry standard in red
leaf whole head production for over 20
years. This distinct variety displays red/
purple leaf margins with green midribs
and base, and has a soft, butter texture
and good pliability for an elevated
consumer experience.
versatile and adaptable determinate salad
variety with high yield potential and good
vine-ripe flavor. This variety represents
Sakata's focus on grower challenges and
disease resistance in breeding efforts; 2255
is TYLCV-resistant, can be used for both
mature green and vine ripe markets and
has potential to be used in multiple slots
and regions across the eastern USA.
The Delite Series is an excellent addition
to the market. This series features three
high-quality snacking peppers in red, yellow
and orange: Ruby Delite, Lemon Delite and
Orange Delite. These large-fruited snack
pepper varieties have very early to early
maturity and good hot set potential. The
fruit have very good size, are smooth and
firm with a glossy, attractive color at full
maturity with good flavor.
Countryside is the newest of Sakata's
spinach line-up and is a beautiful, dark
green, very uniform baby leaf spinach
variety. It has thick, smooth, round
oval leaves and good holding ability
for the baby leaf category. Countryside
also features acceptable bolt tolerance

moderate growth habit, it has performed
well in many West Coast baby leaf

of a CEA (controlled environment
agriculture) group within Sakata Seed
America. The group, led by Sakata's Tracy
Lee (previously from the company's
Home Grown group), touts a wide array
of premium items well suited for indoor
leafy green production, including niche
segments like arugula, pak choi, spinach,
Swiss chard, mustard and beet.
