BLS

Hands-On Workshop: Pediatric HighPerformance CPR (2-hour session)

Mountain Medicine: Lessons from Snowdonia

PETER ANTEVY, MD; CHARLIE COYLE, EMT-P; PAUL LESER, EMT-P;
RAFAEL SUAREZ; TROY R. DICHARD, EMT-P, FP-C, CCP-C

The mountains of Wales' Snowdonia National Park may only be 2,500- to
3,500-feet high, but once people set off up the trails, if something goes
wrong, domestic EMS won't be able to help. It's the job of SAR helicopter
crews and volunteer mountain rescue teams to locate, treat, and evacuate
casualties. Those who are ill or injured are almost all taken to Bangor Hospital, where Dr. Dykes created a database of mountain casualties-around
1,500 cases between 2004 and 2018. This acclaimed, fast-paced, and
wide-ranging presentation reveals what really happens to leisure mountain users who've ended up in trouble. We'll touch on multiple clinical
topics through the lens of mountain casualty epidemiology, mechanisms
of injury, dispatching logistics, and the clinical capability of rescuers.

We often hear about high-performance CPR in adults, yet almost never
in pediatrics. This special 2-hour session will show you exactly how pediatric high-performance CPR should occur, and each participant will
actively practice each of the specified roles. By using this technique, your
department will drastically improve outcomes in pediatric cardiac arrest.

Hands-On Workshop: Stop the Bleed
(2-hour session)
ASA M. MARGOLIS, DO, MPH, MS, FACEP; MATTHEW J. LEVY, DO, MSC,
FACEP, FAEMS, NRP
Need a refresher on basic bleeding control? This 2-hour Stop the Bleed
program provides the knowledge and skills to stop life-threatening
bleeding. Although you will encounter patients with traumatic wounds
in regular settings, the nation is also in an era of increasingly frequent
mass shootings and terrorist attacks, making it critical for providers
to know and practice the proper techniques for rapid intervention
in bleeding control. Attendees completing this course will receive a
certification from the ACS.
Note: Maximum 80 attendees; must pre-register online.
CRITICAL CARE

Humans and Hydraulics: A Review of
Inotropes and Vasopressors for Septic
WILLIAM HEUSER, PHARMD, MS, EMT-P; DANIEL HU, PHARMD, BCCCP
This lecture will examine the differences between
various vasopressors and inotropes, and their use
in different shock syndromes. It will examine
dosing and administration techniques, as well as the physiological
effects on the body. A review of the natural hydraulics of the body as
well as a discussion of the variables in calculating blood pressure and
perfusion will be discussed.

OPERATIONS/MANAGEMENT

The Critical Role of EMS in Injury Prevention in
a People-Centered System
PAUL E. MAXWELL; KEITH GRIFFITHS; MICHAEL S. GERBER, MPH, NRP;
JOHN EHRHART, EMT-P
Over the last decade, the rise of community paramedicine and mobile
integrated healthcare programs has reinvigorated efforts to involve EMS
in injury prevention programs. Along with a growing recognition that
preventing injury and illness reduces costs and improves health, the
EMS profession has adopted a more proactive stance toward caring for
communities. But injury prevention is not solely the domain of community
paramedics or large EMS systems-and to achieve the people-centered
vision described by EMS Agenda 2050, it is time for all EMS organizations
to focus on keeping patients safe and healthy before the emergency, not
just after. Two decades ago, the drowning of a toddler inspired paramedics to create EPIC Medics and assume community leadership in injury
prevention. In addition, they have presented the Nicholas Rosecrans
Award annually to an EMS agency that demonstrates a commitment to
population wellness and injury prevention. In this session, you'll hear
from the winners of this year's award, including how they implemented
their program and the lessons learned along the way. You'll also hear
updates about previous years' winners and engage in a discussion on the
integration of EMS and public health in the community.

Meet the Medical Directors: Part 2
PAUL E. PEPE, MD, MPH, FACEP, MCCM, MACP, FAEMS; PETER ANTEVY,
MD; WILLIAM S. GILMORE, MD, EMT-P, FACEP, FAEMS; COREY M.
SLOVIS, FACP, FACEP, FAAEM, FAEMS; ED RACHT, MD; KENNETH A.
SCHEPPKE, MD; PAUL R. BANERJEE, DO; JEFF JARVIS, MD, EMT-P;
DAVID A. MIRAMONTES, MD; JOELLE DONOFRIO
Led by leading members of the so-called " Eagles " coalition, a de facto
alliance of the jurisdictional EMS (9-1-1 system) Medical Directions
from the nation's largest cities and key federal agencies, this panel will
explore distinct challenges to accepted practice. The Eagles have a track
record for putting forth creative new approaches to problem solving in
EMS along with novel observations and a wealth of EMS system data that
have routinely changed future practices. In this session, Dr. Pepe, the main
coordinator of the Eagles consortium, will moderate and introduce the other
speakers who will report some of the latest discussions from this cohesive and
very influential cadre of physicians and provide their vision of recent crises and
things to come over the next decade.

The Value of EMS: Your Skills Don't Matter
JONAH THOMPSON, BA, NRP, CP-C
Prehospital care professionals are personally
invested in caring for people on their worst day. We
assume that the value of what we do is obvious, yet
as an industry we are struggling to match compensation, agency and
individual, to the work we do and the resources expended. This talk will
explore some of the silos we have created and how the experience of
Mobile Integrated Health programs has helped expose the gap between
what we think is important and what large stakeholders in healthcare
value. 2020 and the additional roles healthcare systems and EMS agencies
were pressed into assuming further highlighted areas where opportunity
exists, it's up to forward-thinking leaders to capitalize on that momentum.

Tips and Tricks of Difficult Intubations
SHAUN FIX, NRP
This segment will deal specifically with placing an endotracheal tube in
the patient that is " hard to tube. " Although we understand other devices
are an option, and often a good choice, this lecture is designed to review
understanding anatomy, positioning, as well as various techniques and
devices to be successful at INTUBATION. Through the use of photos, videos, and review of adjunctive intubation devices, this program will present
many variations of the standard technique to obtain success.
