begin the 1st of the following month
after they make the switch. However,
they cannot change from Medicare
and a Supplement in favor of a Part C
Advantage plan.

4. The Medicare General Enrollment
Period is reserved for people who have
neglected to enroll into Medicare when
they were first eligible and they DID
NOT have credible health insurance
instead. For people who missed their
initial enrollment period and wish to get
their initial Medicare insurance at a later
date, they must wait for the next General
Enrollment Period. This GEP also runs
from January 1st to March 31st, and in
this window people can apply for their
initial Medicare Parts A & B, but the
coverage won't begin until July 1st of
that year. These people will be subject to
the late enrollment penalty which could
be as much as 10% extra for every year
that they delayed enrollment.

5. Finally, GEP Medicare allows for
people with special circumstances to
have allowances for enrollment into
Medicare or to permit changes to their
plans without having to wait for one
of the previous enrollment periods to
occur. This is called the Medicare Special
Enrollment Period or SEP. Some of the
reasons that trigger an SEP are:
* Leaving an employer group plan in
favor of Medicare

* Moving outside of your current plan's
service area
* Returning to the U.S. after
permanently residing abroad

* New to Medicaid or change of level
of Medicaid
* Extra help paying for Medications
* Move into/live in/ moved out of a
long term care facility

* Involuntary loss of current coverage
* Current plan is ending its contract
with Medicare

There are also a few more instances for
SEP enrollment based upon very specific
circumstances. During this enrollment
period people can add or make a change to
their coverage with the effective date being
the 1st of the following month.
Whichever enrollment period you find
yourself in, it's important to know your

current plan coverage, know what you are
looking for in a change as far as doctor
participation, adequate drug coverage,
and manageable costs before making
any change. Keep in mind that if you do
nothing at all, the coverage you currently
have during the AEP will automatically
carry over to the following year so
changing each year might not be necessary.
Medicare insurance is complicated,
and the choices you make can have a
significant impact on your healthcare

options, as well as the out-of-pocket costs
you may incur. It may be prudent to
consult with a knowledgeable broker or
consultant before finalizing your decisions
or advising your clients.
