Reflecting on Year of Change
2019 has been a year of many
transitions for the Bar Association,
and it has been a good year.

I am pleased to report that
during his first year on the job,
our Executive Director Kori
Walter has demonstrated a real
commitment to serving our
members and establishing a solid
working relationship with the Board
of Directors and the leaders in our
community.

That wasn't the only staff change this year.

This summer we said farewell to the long-standing BCBA
Communications Manager Paula Ziegler who moved with her
fiancé to the hiking and recreational opportunities in Arizona.
I thank Paula for always being pleasant, helpful, and wellorganized, especially when it came to coordinating the Law
Foundation's annual Holiday Benefit Luncheon. Succeeding Paula
as Communications Manager is Stephanie M. Weaver, a familiar
face to many of you as she spent the past seven years as a reporter
and columnist at the Reading Eagle covering the courthouse and
legal beat. Stephanie's writing has been recognized statewide and
she has earned Pennsylvania Bar Association Media Awards and
Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association Keystone Awards. Steph
has been posting on social media, coordinating CLEs, and working
diligently on our website redesign project. Be sure to keep an eye
out for her weekly On Tap at the Bar and bi-weekly E-Briefs
columns to find out about our events. If you haven't met Steph yet,
stop by and say "hi" to her.
Our Lawyer Referral Service and Modest Means Program
got a boost this year with the addition of a summer intern. Leslie
Martines-Rivera, who is finishing her senior year at Alvernia
University, is a Criminal Justice major and graduate of Reading
High School. Thank you to Berks County District Attorney John
Adams, Berks Public Defender Glenn D. Welsh, the Honorable
Timothy Rowley and his Law Clerk Michael Wieder, Abraham
Cepeda, and MidPenn Legal Services for allowing Leslie to spend
time shadowing staff and getting a behind the scenes look at the
legal profession.
Bar leaders from across Pennsylvania gathered in May in
Lancaster and again in November in Harrisburg for Pennsylvania
Bar Association House of Delegates meetings. In between
Section and Committee meetings and a voting session on a
host of resolutions, our delegation networked and met with our

counterparts from other counties. The Berks Bar was recognized
for its tremendous support of the PBA's Legislative Affairs
efforts to defeat a sales tax on legal services and other proposals
detrimental to our legal community. Thank you to Terry D. Weiler,
Kim L. Lengert, Jill M. Scheidt, Donald F. Smith, Jr., Frederick
R. Mogel, Heidi B. Masano, G. Thompson Bell, III, Ed Stock,
and Kori Walter in joining me in representing the BCBA at these
meetings.
The Executive Director has reported on many of the events at
the Bar throughout this year, hitting the high notes of the year. A
couple of items I wish to emphasize are that (i) the technology
upgrade for the Bar computer systems was completed this summer
including the server, desktops, firewall, router, and a switch,
(ii) the new website development continues and is targeted for
deployment early next year, (iii) we received a grant from the
PA Bar Insurance Fund to upgrade CLE equipment at the Bar,
and (iv) we continue to meet with Berks County CIO Justin
Loose regarding the high-tech courtroom initiative and WiFi
enhancements at the courthouse for employees, attorneys, and
guests to have more secure, robust, internet access.
Jonathan K. Del Collo, Prothonotary, advises that to avoid the
types of ransomware attacks seen in the Philadelphia and Luzerne
County court systems, Berks is implementing some additional
security measures which will likely require us to refresh our
passwords on the electronic filing system every few months.

I look forward to working with Eden R. Bucher who will serve
as President of the Bar in 2020. Eden received her Juris Doctor
and Master of Business Administration degrees simultaneously
from Widener University. Eden believes that being a good lawyer
means being a problem solver. That philosophy will serve her well
in the coming year as President of the Bar as she is willing and
well prepared to tackle any problems that may arise while always
advancing our Bar's mission.
In closing, Cicero, the often-cited Roman orator and lawyer,
noted:

"Gratitude is not only the greatest of all virtues but the parent
of all the others."
While no one will accuse me of being as eloquent as Cicero, I
certainly share his sentiments about the importance of gratitude.

As President, I am extremely grateful for the contributions
each of our members and the Bar staff have made during the year.
Further, I'm grateful for the numerous opportunities over the year
we have had to reconnect, share stories, and savor fine food and
drink.
