My interest in public health led me to Philadelphia Legal
Assistance's Medical-Legal Community Partnership, during my
2L summer. While at the Partnership I helped patients at two
Philadelphia Medical Clinics apply for public benefits, dispute
debts, enter payment plans, manage their public utilities, and
obtain health insurance. This past semester, I decided to obtain
more corporate experience by procuring an in-house internship
with Arris, a technology company. I assisted in third party due
diligence matters, edited purchasing and sales contracts, attended
negotiations with customers and suppliers, and conducted research
on IP issues. I really enjoyed my in-house semester and hope to
gain more corporate law experience during my career.

I am currently finishing up my legal education as a certified
legal intern in Villanova's Health Law Clinic. I work in tandem
with the graduate-level nursing students to address legal issues that
involve healthcare components including guardianship, power of
attorney, and medical necessity. In addition to client representation,
the Clinic's classroom component includes learning about Social
Security, Medicare/Medicaid, client counseling, case preparation,
and how to interact and communicate with medical professionals
in the course representation.
While still finishing classes, I've started my job search.

My initial experience has been that it's difficult to find job
postings outside of major metropolitan areas.

Connecting with local firms and practitioners who might
be hiring has been a challenge. Attending a Berks County Bar
Association networking event and reaching out to alumni of

both Villanova and Albright has certainly been a huge help in
this process. Personally, I found navigating law school and the
legal profession difficult as a first-generation college and law
student. I think that lacking professional connections is certainly
a disadvantage and struggle for many law students. However,
growing a personal network, especially through internships, is a
huge help.
If my law school education has taught me anything it is to
be flexible, seek out new challenges, and don't be afraid of the
learning process. At the end of a difficult three years, I feel ready
and confident that, with enough preparation, hard work, creative
thinking, and resilience I can tackle any issue thrown my way.

For recent graduates, I would recommend seeking out new
experiences and concentrate on identifying and understanding
the intersections of different practice areas. Being able to identify
additional legal issues or solutions is an extremely valuable
skill. Most importantly, my advice is not to down-play your
accomplishments. Law school is tough, and for many of us who
embarked on our legal journey immediately following undergrad,
it may have been the hardest thing we have ever done. No two
career paths look exactly the same, but finishing a legal education
is certainly an experience that puts you ahead of the game.
Ms. Zillhardt is an Albright College graduate and received
her law degree from the Villanova University Charles Widger
School of Law.
