In 2013, my wife Susan and I were fortunate to travel to
London for a few days on vacation. I was eager to immerse
myself in the historic city. The very first attraction we visited
was Churchill's War Rooms under reinforced concrete in
Westminster. Two days later, when traveling in England's
major post-war contribution to civilization, a Black Cab, the
cabbie immediately realized we were American. He asked
what we had seen thus far on our trip, and I perhaps somewhat
gushingly told him of our trip to Mr. Churchill's War Rooms.
He looked at me in the backseat in his mirror and said, "Well
you know, he really wasn't a very successful politician." I was
more than a little taken aback by his response, and I rejoined,
"Well, he almost single-handedly saved Western civilization,
and that's good enough for me." Without the slightest
hesitation, the cabbie acknowledged, "Well, there is that."
Perhaps Roberts' work, and others like it, can keep the
memory of this giant alive at least a little longer in Churchill's
native land.
