Berks Bench

"Team Up"

This month marks the first anniversary of my Grandmother's
passing. When she died, she was a whopping 98 years old. As a young
Jewish girl in New York, she was the object of anti-Semitism and
anti-feminism. My grandmother earned her Ph.D. while the mother
of three, and established herself as a reputable, fiery, and classy
professor of history at several colleges. She was inspired by religion,
politics, culture, and gender dynamics.
Dr. Florence Teicher Bloom was born on the heels of the ratification
of the 19th Amendment, 100 years ago. In her honor, I find it
appropriate to highlight the women of the bench in Berks County.
Only a lifetime ago, it was not legal for women to even vote for their
elected officials, much less serve as elected officials.
Currently, four women serve as Judges in the Court of Common
Pleas. I interviewed three of the judges to highlight their legal careers
in honor of this historic occasion.
