when asleep, compared to men. Because women don't always
recognize these symptoms as those of a heart attack, they
tend to show up in emergency departments too late. Also
because of the atypical nature of the symptoms, women might
be diagnosed less often with heart disease than men are.
Fortunately, by learning about the heart disease symptoms,
women can reduce their risks.
It is important to learn about the risk factors of
cardiovascular disease. Traditional risks factors like high
cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, family
history of heart disease and obesity affect both men and
women's cardiovascular outcomes. However, there are risk
factors that affect women's cardiovascular risk specifically.
These include menopause, mental stress and depression,
hormone replacement therapy, inflammatory disorders
including lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as pregnancy
complications, like high blood pressure or diabetes during
pregnancy.
What can women do to reduce their risk of heart disease?
Living a healthy lifestyle can help reduce the risk of heart
disease. It is important to quit smoking and avoid exposure
to secondhand smoke, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy
weight, eat a healthy diet, manage your stress, limit alcohol and
take medications as prescribed.

cardiovascular risk, know how to recognize the symptoms
of heart disease and discuss your cardiovascular health with
your doctor. So, let this Heart Month serve as an opportunity
to find time in the busy everyday schedule and arrange for a
doctor's appointment. In addition, let's talk to the women in
our lives about their cardiac risk and educate people around us.
In the end, we need to take care of ourselves first in order to be
able to take care of others.
