Left: Brad Lidge shared about delivering the final pitch to help the
Philadelphia Phillies become World Series Champions in 2008.

Brad Lidge
Position: Relief Pitcher
Draft: Was the 17th overall player selected by the
Houston Astros in 1998 from the University of Notre
Dame
MLB Career: Played from 2002-2012 for the Astros,
Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals
Nickname: Lights Out
Career Highlight: Struck out Tampa Bay's Eric Hinske
to clinch Game 5 and the 2008 World Series title as the
closer for the Phillies. He was a perfect 48-for-48 in save
opportunities and earned the NL Comeback Player of
the Year that season.
Stats Deep Dive: Lidge pitched in 603 games over his
11-year career and earned 225 saves. Lidge threw as
many as 3 innings just once and as many as 2 innings
only 23 times. In the post-season, he pitched 2 innings
seven times. The remainder of his 39 appearances were
less than 2 innings. After he came to the Phillies in 2008,
all of his 214 regular season appearances and 22 postseason appearances were less than 2 innings.

T

he iconic image of Brad Lidge evokes memories of the
last time Philadelphia Phillies fans experienced absolute
baseball bliss.
The precise moment was at 9:59 PM on October 29, 2008.
Lidge struck out Tampa Bay's Eric Hinske with a
sublime slider that Hinske missed by a mile. Lidge took a
few steps off the mound, dropped to his knees, extended his
arms toward the heavens and screamed "We won the World
Series," or something like that. Lidge was THE MAN and
the Phillies were "THE 2008 WORLD CHAMPIONS OF
BASEBALL." And yes, Hinske missed that slider by a mile.
After hoisting the World Series trophy for the first time
in 28 years, there was a massive championship parade with
dalmatians, fire trucks, and a Chase Utley expletive, which was
fun to watch. The Phillies captured the pennant again in 2009
but dropped the World Series against the stinkin' Yankees
in six games, which wasn't as much fun to watch. Then came
disappointing playoff losses in 2010 and 2011, which as time
goes by are blurring together in the psyche. The Phillies have
not been in the post-season since.
Despite the current post-season drought, Lidge's appearance
at the 12th Annual Law Foundation of Berks County and
PICPA Reading Chapter Holiday Benefit Luncheon stirred
memories of the euphoria of that moment he clinched the 2008
World Series.
Lidge was the headliner at the luncheon on December 6
that filled the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Wyomissing with nearly
500 guests and sponsors.
Event Chair Mark Caltagirone, as he does each year, worked
tirelessly for months setting up this event, which raised more
than $50,000 for youth and legal services programs in Berks
County.
Lidge, who earned his "Lights Out" nickname while playing
with the Houston Astros, transported the crowd back to Game
