Sticky toffee pudding a
scrumptious ending to
any meal.

Liquor had to be kept under lock and key to skirt
Pennsylvania's Blue Laws.

A modern take on
my mother's favorite:
Pennsylvania farm-raised
duck a l'orange.

It didn't matter as the dish was better than any veal osso
bucco I've had anywhere else and I would order that dish again
and again. The serving was so large that I took two-thirds of it
home and it was just as tasty the second day, if not more so.

The pork shank was what my spouse ordered the first time
we dined there, so I knew I was going to like it as I enjoyed the
bite I had tried of his.
On our second trip, at my urging, he ordered the meatloaf,
which featured a well-balanced combination of beef, veal
and pork mince that was shaped into an over-sized meatball.
Wrapped in pancetta, it was served with a tasty mash of
Yukon Gold potatoes, braised green beans, red beets and most
unusually, a breaded and deep-fried hard-boiled egg. The plate
was sauced with a shallot and balsamic pan gravy that pulled it
all together and it was quite simply the most beautifully plated
serving of meatloaf.

One of our guests ordered the duck a l'orange, something
I know my mother ordered every time she spied it on a menu,
and this dish did not disappoint. This was a far more modern
version than my mother probably ever enjoyed as it had a maple
anise glaze. The wild rice on the plate didn't excite me but the
green lentils were an inspired accompaniment.

Our other guest ordered the pretzel and bacon encrusted
Atlantic cod. It was perfectly cooked and served with rock
shrimp, fava beans, and asparagus. The dish was also dotted with
sundried tomatoes and had a generous serving of sweet corn
risotto. A seafood bordelais helped tie it all together. I'm not
sure we heard him speak between the time the dish arrived and
the time he was certified as a full-fledged member of the clean
plate club.

squeezed grapefruit and lime juices. It was the perfect elixir to
wash down our starter of soft pretzels and freshly made potato
chips. It was without a doubt the silliest appetizer we've ever
ordered, but it's a must-try if you are a potato chip lover. It's also
something we would order again, just the like the warm sticky
toffee pudding we shared for dessert.
Our server gave us a tour of the restaurant, starting with a
peek into the pristine kitchen and ending in the lounge in the
lowest level.

There is a framed flask made to look like a book. However, I
was most interested in the antique liquor bottles that were tucked
into a locked rack just inside the restaurant's main entrance. It
seems that even after Prohibition ended, The Log Cabin still
served liquor on days the law deemed it off limits.

The old Blue Laws forbade the sale of alcohol on Sundays, so
The Log Cabin would sell liquor by the bottle to its customers on
one of the other six days of the week.
Those bottles were then stored in the locked rack and would
be served to said owner on Sundays as the booze had been paid
for previously.
Overall, the dishes served at the Log Cabin proved to
be as creative as the bar and restaurant owners who survived
Prohibition and found loopholes in Pennsylvania's strict Blue
Laws.

A silly but irresistible
starter is the chips and soft
pretzel plate.

Because we were in a speakeasy, we had to start our night
with some signature cocktails. I enjoyed my Hemmingway
Special, featuring rum, maraschino liquor, and a blend of fresh
