colleagues, the smiles on the faces of their families signified
to me how much they appreciated the time that was spent
hearing about their loved ones' professional lives and how
much they were appreciated by their fellow bar members.
The Law Foundation of Berks County, the charitable arm
of our Association, helps members of our community in ways
that are not publicized enough. Now that I am on the Board
of the Foundation, I was privileged to attend the meeting at
which the recipients of last year's Foundation grants explained
the ways in which those grants helped children in foster care
gain a voice and in many cases, a friend, through volunteers in
the Court Appointed Special Advocate program, and help the
talented children in Berks County continue to raise their own
voices in song. For those of you who have not yet contributed
to the Foundation's annual campaign, please do so. The
Foundation's impact is amazing and far-reaching.
Ok, enough of the touchy-feely stuff. In this issue, we
celebrate the passing of the 19th Amendment giving women
the right to vote. I cannot even imagine what the women
back then had to go through to get the right to be heard and
have a say in the way things are done in this country, a right
that most of us take for granted and do not even exercise. I
am proud of the fact that my own daughters make it a point
to vote in every election, and I am thankful for the women
who made it possible for them to do so. My best friend from
law school, a mother of two fine sons, recently told me that it
will not be long before women will be running this country. I
couldn't help but think, don't we already?
I am extremely happy to be the President of this
Association. Welcome to our new members of the Board of
Directors, Thad Gelsinger, Jordan Fegley, John Reigle and
Vice President Jim Smith. Jim and I served on the Board
several years ago as Secretary and Treasurer and I can't wait to
see what we will be able to do this time. Our not-so-newanymore Executive Director Kori Walter has already shown
that he is more than capable of herding the cats that we are.
We will face some challenges. But together, we will continue
to make a difference.
Ms. Bucher is the 87th President of the Berks County
Bar Association and an attorney at Leisawitz Heller.
