PRO BONO PROFILES

Despite a Full Plate,
He Has Time for an Extra Portion

A

By Donald F. Smith, Jr., Esquire

successful lawyer, enterprising
businessman, active father
and a devoted pro bono
attorney.
Such is Jeffrey R. Boyd, Esquire.
That devotion for representing the
disadvantaged has resulted in Jeff
being recognized by the Pennsylvania
Bar Association with its 2018 Pro
Bono Award. He will be honored
with the presentation at the Berks
County Bar Association's Pro Bono
Celebration on October 23 at the
Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Amy B. Good, Esquire, Manager
of the Reading office for MidPenn
Legal Services, nominated Jeff for
the award. "Attorney Boyd can be
counted on without fail to appear for
service when scheduled, meet with
the maximum number of clients
(four) and accept them all for extended service representation."
Now, that is exceptional!

But even more exceptional, he was scheduled in the pro bono
rotation at the MidPenn office for a second time in the same year
by mistake, and, while he was offered the opportunity to opt-out
of the second round, he did not. According to Amy, Jeff "politely
declined and happily served twice that year-again accepting all of
his scheduled clients for extended service."
It is not like Jeff is sitting in his office "twiddling his thumbs."
After graduating from Villanova University School of Law in
2002, Jeff went into practice with his father, the now-retired Craig
S. Boyd, in the Boyertown firm of Boyd & Karver. His practice
has taken him into twenty-three Pennsylvania counties, but one
will find him primarily in Berks or Montgomery Counties.
Eighty percent of his practice is family law, with the balance
being a mix that includes real estate, minor criminal and estates, to
name a few of his practice areas. He notes, rightfully with pride,
that he has conducted full trials in every court division-family,
orphans' court, criminal, bankruptcy and civil.

Besides having a thriving
law practice, Jeff is a successful
businessman. When a welder-friend
was laid off, Jeff and he started a
business, Mauch Mechanical &
Industrial, doing millwrighting,
rigging, welding, fabrication and pipe
fitting. Five years ago, his friend died
and Jeff is now the sole owner.

Being willing to expand his
business interests, Jeff further acquired
Vessel Service Company, a facility in
Lemoyne that performs minor and
major repairs to stainless tractortrailer tankers. A friend oversees
the day-to-day operations of both
businesses.
Home life is active as well. Jeff,
his wife and law-colleague, Tina M.
Boyd, have two children, Natalie, 10,
and Jonah, 7.

With such a full plate, why is Jeff so willing to give of his time
for active pro bono representation? "It is the way I was raised.
Tina and I believe that pro bono is the best way to help the poor.
We are both happy to take MidPenn's calls."
Tina was the recipient of the Pro Bono Award in 2007. As
noted in the Barrister article at the time, she was described by
MidPenn as "an attorney that we can rely upon...Tina commits
to see cases through to contested hearings." She has inspired her
husband to do the same.

When asked if one pro bono case stands out in his memory,
Jeff recalls being successful after completing a full custody
trial, whereby the father was then able to see his children after
being denied access for a very long time. "I derive quite a bit of
satisfaction from my pro bono work," concludes the 2018 awardee.

Attorney Good wrapped up her nomination of Jeff with these
words: "I am grateful for his humble service to the disadvantaged
in our community."
All of us concerned with providing those in need with access
to justice join Amy in expressing our gratitude to Jeff and Tina.
