"Killing Fields" and learned how adults were lined in front of a
ditch. A Khmer Rouge would stand behind the victim and ram
a metal rod into the skull of the innocent and push the body into
the ditch... some being dead, some dying. As horrific as that
was, the "Killing Tree" still haunts me. These butchers would
take the babies of the middle class families, hold them by the leg
and swing the baby's head into the tree. Ribbons on the Tree
were placed there by relatives who ultimately learned the fate of
these infants.
We went to Tuol Sleng Genocide Prison and saw where
thousands of Cambodians were kept until they could be moved
into the country and executed. We spoke to one of the few
survivors, Chum Mey, who only escaped being killed because he
knew how to repair typewriters. Apparently, the Khmer Rouge,
like the Nazis, was fixated with documenting the lives they were
taking and needed typewriters. Even though Chum survived, he
has very poor hearing due to electrodes being stuck in his ears as
part of the torture his captives inflicted upon him. Ultimately,
the Vietnamese Army invaded Cambodia and overthrew the
Khmer Rouge in 1978, or who knows how many more people
would have been murdered.
We were struck again by the growth and capitalistic energy
in Phnom Penh. The city is just bustling with fledgling
businesses both inside new buildings and on the sidewalks.
As in the other cities we visited, the streets are packed with
motorbikes and scooters, sometimes with an entire family on
one bike.
