and Tony Perez), then referring to the "Great Eight"- the
starting lineups of the Reds teams that won consecutive World
Championships in 1975 and 1976 - Bench requested that I
name all players in the latter group. I ultimately passed, despite
temporarily experiencing a senior moment as to Ken Griffey in
right field. ( Just in case someone reading this does - unlikely
as that is - not know the identity of that august group it would
be 1B Tony Perez,; 2B Joe Morgan; SS Dave Concepcion; 3B
Pete Rose; LF George Foster; CF Caesar Geronimo; RF the
aforementioned senior Griffey; and C Bench.)
Regularly appearing at events as motivational speaker,
Johnny Bench certainly knows how to tell a story, and indeed
has plenty of them to tell. Bench is able to talk not only about
his baseball career, but also about life in general. On the baseball
matters, although we didn't talk about The Duke, we did talk
about Mickey and Willie as Bench spoke of his experiences
with greats of the game. Starting with his fellow Oklahoman,
Mickey Mantle, who he had idolized from the time he was 5
years old, Bench related that he has a photo of himself as a child,
together with his father, Ted, pitching pennies with Mantle.
He also shared a story about how, later in his life, he invited
Mantle to participate in a golf tournament Bench had organized.
Mantle suggested at the end of the day that he and Bench go to
a Marriott across the street from their hotel for a drink. Bench
related how the bouncer said, "Johnny, you go ahead in, but I've
thrown Mickey here out three times already."
Of Willie Mays, Bench related how in his rookie year of 1968
when he was selected to the All-Star team as a reserve, that Mays
quietly approached him in the locker room before the game
and said, "You should have been the starting catcher," which he
said floored him as he didn't know Mays at all. He also related a
humorous story about how he delayed calling for a pitch when
Mays was at bat. When asked by Mays when he was going to
call for a pitch, Bench said to him, "As soon as you stop turning
around," referring to Mays habit of turning and looking to steal
the signal the catcher was giving for the pitch. Mays smiled and
said, "Oh man, you got me," faced the pitcher, and the game then
went on.
Of former Big Red Machine teammates now in the Hall of
Fame, Bench described Joe Morgan as the best baseball player
he ever played with or against, relating how Morgan could hit a
