Stirs Fond Memories

I scored my favorite childhood breakfast. The heaping plate
waffle squares that had honey in the batter. Just like those carefree
days at my family's farm, I swear I could taste my grandmother's
love in every bite. Following the server's suggestion, I lightly
drizzled the offering with some of their special honey. I tried
three varieties of - raspberry, strawberry and peach. Frankly, I
could not distinguish the nuances of those honeys because the
ice cream overpowered them, but I loved the sensation of gooey
honey mixed with the frozen goodness.
The server seemed surprised I didn't want to try two different
flavors of ice cream, but as soon as I saw the salted caramel option
I didn't have eyes for any other. It was a nice sized serving for
$5.00 and if we go back, I'll start at the same stand with the same
selection and leave the $4.00 milkshakes for John. He declared
that the chocolate milkshake was the best he'd ever sipped, adding
it tasted like a rich, dark chocolate bar that had been liquefied. I
tried a few sips and had to admit that it definitely lived up to all
the hype we had heard about it over the last 20 years.
We then meandered around the Farm Show complex for the
next three hours, browsing at the exhibits, livestock and lively
sights, as well as taking in the eclectic aromas. It was fascinating
to see rows of old tractors and realize how vital our farms are to
our Commonwealth's economy. Even though the Keystone State
is home to one of the largest cities in the country (Philadelphia),
agribusiness remains one of its top industries. After walking about
consumed, but none of them were tempting. I was about to get
newest food stand selling something called the Five Layer, which
was served in a Solo cup filled with some of my other favorite
comfort foods. It featured servings of mac & cheese, smoked
chicken (smoked pork was also an option), corn pudding, chow
chow slaw and house-made golden sauce, which was really just
a French dressing, that I believe was made with honey. All the
ingredients were piled on top of each other. The chow chow
looked nothing like the Mason jars of chow chow I remember
being lined up on the table during canning season on the farm.
This one was more like a true slaw and included cabbage, carrots
and Brussels sprouts. It was worth the $8, and it got me thinking
that the Five Layer needs to replace the Walking Taco at every
high school sporting event. I will be recreating it at home in the
near future.
I didn't expect to spend so much of my day at the Farm Show
reliving so many happy memories from my childhood, but I'm so
glad I did. I just wish it hadn't taken me 20 years to get there. If
you're inclined, I recommend you go early on a weekday and try to
eat at off-peak hours to avoid the long food lines, take lots of cash
if you plan to eat your way around the farm show, and definitely
start your day with ice cream and waffles for breakfast.

three miles through the halls of the massive venue, we were ready
for lunch. We headed back to the Food Court to decide what
carbohydrate-laden dish would be worth the calories after our
sweet yet rich breakfasts.
