Paula M. Szortyka
Paula M. Szortyka, 89, passed away on January 2,
2019. Mrs. Szortyka graduated as the valedictorian of
her high school class and then attended Misericordia
University in 1947. Ms. Szortyka married her husband
Stanley on June 25, 1949 and together they started
their business, Quaker Maid Meats, Inc. in 1960. Ms.
Szortyka returned to college at Albright College and
graduated in 1976. She continued to law school and
graduated from Temple Law School at the age of 51.
After graduation, Ms. Szortyka became the first female
assistant district attorney for Berks County where she
practiced for 25 years. Her years of experience and
knowledge were shared with many new attorneys in
the District Attorney's Office. In her youth, Ms. Szortyka
was an accomplished accordionist and she, along
with her sister on clarinet, played many weddings
throughout the county. Ms. Szortyka was respected for
her integrity and dedication to doing the right thing.
She enjoyed her many animals over the years including
her neighborhood feral cat colony. Ms. Szortyka is
survived by her son, S. Sergei, her daughter, P. Nancy,
grandchildren Colette and Natashja and two great
grandchildren, Gary and Alexsandr.
