Retirement

To this Bar Junkie, it seemed like the stars were aligned.
I applied and was honored to have been offered the position
in May of that year, giving me seven months to complete my
transition in practice. I was blessed with more time than a
newly-elected judge typically has to unwind a practice.
Now I am retiring again. Attorney Abraham Cepeda has
asked me, "Will it be an American retirement or a Dominican
Republic retirement?" He explained that the former involves
undertaking more relaxing work, while the latter simply
involves relaxation. In contemplating the form of life
after law, Poll suggests first determining your "satisfaction
quotient." Then, "what dreams or aspirations do you have,
professionally and personally, that have not yet been realized?"
Is it to do a different type of work, employing
transferrable skills like negotiation, writing, public speaking
and critical thinking? Or maybe you have an entrepreneurial
idea. How about giving back to the profession by teaching,
advising a mock trial team, writing regularly for The Barrister
or representing the indigent?
Options abound as we learn from our retired colleagues
in the article "Living the Post-Law Life," beginning on
page 20. Helping with the food bank, preparing food for
Meals on Wheels, teaching retirees on subjects of interest,
substitute teaching in the public schools, pursing a passion for
historical research, reading books that had been put off, biking
with friends or writing your memories are but a few of the
activities they are pursuing. One is left with the impression
that most attorneys do a blend of American and Dominican
Republic retirements.
Poll advises, "Whatever choices you make, be sure you do
so with purpose. Just as you have thoughtfully pursued your
career, studied hard, worked harder, and gained an expertise
and a positive professional reputation, you will want to
make the same kind of investment in the next steps of your
journey..."
Unlike the Silent Generation, Baby Boomers are turning
the following joke into a falsehood: "Lawyers do not retire,
they just lose their appeal." Subsequent generations are sure
to follow the example of the Baby Boomers.
That means Life After Law should be read by every
practicing attorney, earlier in their career the better. One
should not stick their head in the sand concerning an exit
strategy, especially since it is not always voluntary.
We all deserve a soft landing.
