Retirement

Retirement,
TRANSITION
and Gratitude
FOR LEADERSHIP
Joan E. London, 2018 President

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END!
It's an expression we use and hear at the end of memorable
holidays, fun vacations, and the winding down of happy
occasions. In this edition, dedicated to the topic of retirement,
this saying is uniquely appropriate as we explore various aspects
of winding down our careers to enjoy life's second (or third or
fourth) act.
The expression has special meaning to all of us this year, with
the retirement of Don Smith after a decade of long distinguished
tenure as our Executive Director. On a personal level, this is my
last President's column, the end of a wonderful presidential year,
and my last opportunity to address you from this platform.
Retirement is a transition to a new stage of life, and is not
intended to be an end to our productivity or our enjoyment
of life. A happy and successful retirement, without financial
worries, requires years of planning. For readers who are at the
beginning of your careers, this is the time to begin saving. The
401(k), IRA, and similar savings plans are a painless way to put
money aside and direct its investment to grow your retirement
nest egg. Please take full advantage of them.
This issue provides all of us-young,
mid-career, or seasoned-with sound advice
to help us achieve our retirement goals.
We need to think of the retirement that
we want, and work towards it, just as we
work towards all of our professional and
personal goals. There are examples in this
edition of our colleagues who are enjoying
their retirement by pursuing opportunities

to serve our community. You are truly fortunate if you have the
time, health, and ability to do those things which you love, but
could not while in practice because of constraints on time created
by the practice of law. Our legal training and expertise can also
be used in our retirement years to help others, as we know from
experience that there is no shortage of need. Retirement can be
a time of challenges, but it can also be a time of re-branding of
ourselves, and can be as much an opportunity for growth as our
legal careers have been.
