Retirement, Transition, And Gratitude For Leadership
Continued from page 5

Joan and Walt at the ABA meeting with the PBA leadership
The end of 2018 is the end of my presidential year, and the
end of next year will mark the end of four years of serving on
the Bar Association Board of Directors. It has been an honor to
serve, and I thank all of you for the trust that you placed in me.
It has been a lot of work, but it has been incredibly rewarding,
and I would not have traded the experience of leadership for
anything! My transition to Bar leadership, and this year in
particular, have been one of growth, and of doing things I
would never have visualized myself doing. Some examples:
Those of you who know me well have heard me say, "I don't
travel north," and know that I am not and have not been for
many years a member of the American Bar Association. Yet
this past February, I found myself traveling to the ABA MidYear Meeting in Vancouver, BC. I enjoyed my time with the
Pennsylvania delegation, and met many of my fellow Bar leaders
from the US and Canada (including the President of the Guam
Bar Association, Jacque Terlaje, who was pleasantly surprised that
someone else in the room knew where Guam was located, had
been there recently-a rarity for civilians from the mainland- and
understood its significance as a US Territory).
Another example: I'm hardly known as an environmental
activist or a fan of international NGOs, yet at our Punta
Cana, DR Bar Retreat, I presented a seminar on International
environmental treaties which had the goal of "Keeping the
Coast Clear." Tremendous learning experience-paired with
Walt's discussion of laws of beach treasure hunting and a metal
detecting demonstration following on the beach (we were only
detained at the airport briefly until DR Customs figured out that
the metal detector was legal and not dangerous!). And let's face
it, the last place you would expect to find me is in a Kindergarten
classroom. Yet, believing that I cannot ask others to do anything

I wouldn't do, I read to Kindergarten classes for "Book 'Em,"
and found the experience incredibly rewarding.
The end of my service as President, and ultimately the end of
my service on our Board and in the PBA House of Delegates on
behalf of Berks, will not be an end for me. There will be many
more acts to follow in my continued BCBA and PBA service.
You will still see me working hard on behalf of the Municipal
Law Section (or the "Night Hawks" of the profession, as we call
ourselves), here and on the state level, to educate fellow solicitors
and hopefully improve local government. I will always be there
for bar leaders and will be glad to take the time to answer any
questions. Best wishes to President Jeff Franklin and PresidentElect Eden Bucher as they start their terms! Please give them
your assistance and support!
It has been a privilege to speak on behalf of the Bar
Association at events such as the installation of Judge Nevius,
the naturalization of new American citizens, the welcoming of
new lawyers, the recognition of our Pro Bono Program, and,
sadly, paying respects to deceased members at the Memorial
Service. As a student of Political Science, I especially
enjoyed the opportunity to moderate the panel discussion
on congressional redistricting for the O'Pake Institute at
Alvernia University, which was especially relevant in February
knowing that Berks County had the dubious distinction of four
congressional districts, including one compared in shape to
"Goofy Kicking Donald Duck."
The opportunity to point out in the "State of the Bar"
address that this is the first time that both the Bar President
and the President Judge held degrees from Villanova is one that
was of special pride, especially in the year of Villanova's NCAA
Championship! The greatest honor, however, has been the
unique opportunity in my presidency of helping to shape the

Naturalization Ceremony with the keynote speaker, our very
own Gabriela G. Raful, who shared with those at the ceremony:
"My story is not great or unique. Just like yours, it is a story of a
remarkable journey in search of the American dream, a story of
perseverance and passion."
