Inn at Little Washington
Continued from page 23

My husband was equally thrilled by his blackened Wagyu ribeye
entrée. It was tender enough to be cut with a fork. The plate included
lightly grilled romaine and a jewel like bone marrow custard that defies
description. The server gently poured a buttery red wine finishing sauce on
the dish at the table which helped the components retain their individual
flavors.
A palate cleansing square of coconut sorbet accompanied by a passion
fruit and ginger granita followed the meat course. It was served on
another specially designed plate to properly showcase it. Of all the palate
cleansers in all the world, I doubt any will ever compare to the sweet, cool
smoothness of that treat. My only complaint was that the serving could
have been bigger, but that would have defeated its purpose as a palate
cleanser.
For the dessert course, my spouse opted for the Inn's cheese plate
in a bid to see its rolling cheese cart that moo's, while I selected the
Apparently a Pear cheesecake. Sculpted and airbrushed to look like a
delicate forelle pear, it was almost too pretty to eat. Tucked inside was
a pear compote that was transcendent. It was hands down the most
beautiful dessert I've ever enjoyed.

The crispy eggplant Milanese, served on a bed of onions sliced
as thinly as noodles, delights as a third course.

Just when we thought the meal had ended and that the evening
couldn't have been any more special, our server arrived with a slate of rich
dark chocolate perched over a square plate. She then cracked the thin
chocolate into pieces with two spoons revealing candied grapefruit rinds
hidden underneath. Also worthy of a mention were the premise-made
breads served with a special vibrant yellow butter from New England. The
wines were all well-paired, helping prove why the Inn has received the
Wine Spectator Grand Award for 26 consecutive years. An impressive
streak of distinction that has lasted one year longer than we've been
married.

Although we had talked for nearly 20 years about making the trek to
the Inn at Little Washington, we probably wouldn't have gone this year
had it not been for COVID-19. As we headed back to Pennsylvania from
our perfect getaway, thankful there wasn't a can of Clamato Budweiser
in sight during our trip, we agreed it was the best meal either of us had
ever eaten. We even talked about a return trip. We also agreed not to wait
another two decades, or for the outbreak of the next pandemic, to visit
again.
The proper high tea is a civilized way to unwind after a
3 ½-hour car ride.

The Inn makes sure diners maintain proper social
distancing with the help of these mannequins.
