1804 newspaper advertisement authored by Jackson
seeking the return of a runaway slave
members of the Jackson family remained at The Hermitage
as caretakers. The property was sold by Jackson's adopted son,
Andrew, Jr., to the State of Tennessee in 1856. Today, the
property is carefully maintained and has been restored to its
appearance in 1837 when Jackson returned from Washington,
D.C. The Hermitage is visited by more than 200,000 guests in
a non-COVID year and is the third most popular presidential
home destination in the United States.
Our thought-provoking visit to The Hermitage provided
both a lesson in history and interesting perspectives and it is
certainly a worthwhile tour for American history buffs when
visiting Tennessee.
