President Andrew Jackson's home at The Hermitage
n a recent trip to Tennessee with my son Evan,
we had occasion to visit The Hermitage, President
Andrew Jackson's homestead for 41 years. In need of
Jackson's first home at The
Hermitage; later converted to
slave quarters
temporary respite from the honky-tonks and liberal libations
provided in downtown Nashville, we took a 20-minute Uber
ride that delivered us to the 1,120-acre site, which includes
Jackson's mansion, plantation, slave quarters, garden and
the final resting place of Jackson and his wife of 37 years,
Rachel Jackson. The sprawling grounds of The Hermitage
and the adjacent museum pay tribute to Jackson's many
accomplishments but also appropriately recognize his failures.
" Old Hickory, " as he would become known due to his
strength and determination in war time, was born March
15, 1767, on the border of North and South Carolina. His
exact birthplace remains a mystery. His father, also Andrew,
died before Jackson was born leaving him to be raised by his
mother, who died when he was 14.

Although most famous for serving as the 7th President of
the United States, the road to Jackson's public service started in
1784 in North Carolina where he began his legal studies at age
17. He would apprentice there with prominent local lawyers
for three years. In 1787, after examination before two judges
of the North Carolina Superior Court, he was admitted to
practice " in the several courts of pleas and quarter sessions. "
A " vigorous foe of outlaws, " he was appointed County
Solicitor in the western district of North Carolina after having
