Maintaining Your Sanity During a Pandemic: As Easy as Riding a Bike
Continued from page 11

Five Great Berks Bike Rides

If Jay's story inspired you to jump back on your bicycle this spring, here are a
few prime locations in the area where you can plan your next ride.

French Creek State Park
The park is a great spot for all kinds of cycling. More than 20 miles of trails
are open to mountain bikers. Road riders can enjoy shaded stretches of road
with relatively light vehicle traffic limited to slower speeds. And if you have
a gravel bike, you can enjoy the best of both worlds! There are plenty of
parking spaces and restroom facilities available.

Schuylkill River Trail: Birdsboro to Pottstown
Eventually the River Trail will let you get from Frackville to Philadelphia,
but for now, not all the segments are connected. The segment from
Birdsboro to Pottstown is approximately 9 miles of mostly crushed stone
in Berks and a bit of paved macadam in Montgomery County. There is
a bicycle fix-it station at the Birdsboro Trailhead with an air pump and
commonly needed tools. Several parking areas along the path have restroom
facilities.

Mount Penn: City Park to Lake Antietam
Riding from City Park up to the Pagoda, across Skyline Drive, and
eventually to Lake Antietam is not the easiest six miles in Berks County, but
it's one of the most rewarding. The views from the lookouts are even better
when you pedal your way to the top. Climbing the switchbacks on Duryea
is tough, but shaded. Once you pass the Fire Tower, you can almost coast all
the way down to the lake via Skyline Drive and Angora Road.

Wyomissing Park
Although it's only a stretch of about two
miles from Old Mill to the Wyomissing
Quarry Soccer Fields, the trail between
the two is a good place for a relaxed ride
-- even with children. The route is paved,
winding along the Wyomissing Creek.
It's a great segment to incorporate into a
longer ride, as it's considerably safer than
riding along Museum Road between
Wyomissing and Shillington.

Out Your Front Door
Any ride that begins and ends at your residence can be great. Whether
you are riding three miles or 60, starting and finishing at home is super
convenient. When you get five minutes down the road and realize you
forgot the water bottle by the sink... it's only a quick u-turn to grab it. Not
to mention time spent transporting your bicycle to and from a particular
location is time you could have spent pedaling!
