T
he tour group from the World Affairs Council left the
Sears parking lot at the Berkshire Mall at 6:30 a.m. to
be inside Washington, D.C. before 10. No problem with
timing. We pulled into the Woodrow Wilson Conference Center
well before 10.
Nothing's perfect, especially in the nation's capital. In the
conference center we had the slides and the lecture by the Wilson
scholar. Officials from Honduras overstayed their visit. Even with
the abbreviated lecture, I came away impressed. Truthfully, I didn't
know as much about Wilson as I thought I knew. I read volumes
about Ike, Nixon, FDR, JFK and my favorite, Truman.
We had a quick cafeteria lunch before we visited the Wilson
home, the one on 16th Street where the ex-president lived after
he left the White House. He shared the large home with his
second wife and two household servants.
" The portrait on the mantel - the one that Woodrow
Wilson looked at before he slept through the night - that's Jane
Russell, " our tour guide announced confidently. No one said a
word.

I couldn't let the tour guide's statement pass without comment.
I said as politely as possible: " That's not Jane Russell. " I couldn't
make out the face in the portrait but, I knew it couldn't be Jane
Russell. Wilson died in 1924. Jane Russell was only a baby in
1924. I also explained the social impossibility of the portrait being
Jane Russell.
I told the guide, " Jane Russell was a poor girl who worked in
a dentist's office in L. A. Howard Hughes discovered her during
World War II when Jane Russell assisted the dentist working on
Hughes' teeth. "
The guide called in her supervisor.
" That's Jane Russell's mother, " the supervisor said. I told her,
" Lillian Russell would be more Wilson's style. Jane Russell was a
poor girl in L.A. Her mother didn't model. " The supervisor didn't
back down. " Her mother acted and posed for portraits, " she said.
Our stay in the Wilson bedroom ended.
I didn't want to bore the group of 12 with my involvement
with Jane Russell. It began at age 7 in Atlantic City.
