Lessons Learned from Mock Trial

Eight Berks County high schools competed in the 2020
Mock Trial competition sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar
Association. I asked them to share their perspective and to
send photos of their teams. The 2020 Berks County Teams
are Antietam, Berks Catholic, Conrad Weiser, Daniel Boone,
Exeter, Fleetwood, Schuylkill Valley and Wilson.

First, a little background about Mock Trial. Teacher advisors
at each school have one or more attorney advisors to help
educate the students about the justice system generally and to
teach them legal skills preparing them to conduct a mock trial.
The legal skills include how to develop a compelling story from
the case facts, the different techniques for asking questions
on direct examination and cross examination, preparing an
Opening Statement and a Closing Statement, introducing
exhibits, qualifying an expert witness, and how to make and
respond to objections. Although trial techniques can take
lawyers years of education and many years of practice to master,
the students learn these skills in a club setting, meeting once or
more per week for an hour or so during the school year while
managing their class work, other activities and possibly parttime employment.
