Wishing We All Could Be
Home for the Holidays
By Susan N. Denaro, Esquire

I

don't know what I was thinking when I bought a pack of 12
Christmas crackers when they landed on the store shelves this
Fall. I didn't honestly believe that this pandemic would magically
disappear as I haven't had any Kool-Aid lately, but somehow, I assumed
we'd all be together. Given the harsh warnings to restrict even family
gatherings, I'm really missing the days when the only scary thing about
breaking bread together was the fear of what would come out of my
kitchen.
Just after quarantine started, I spent a Saturday morning organizing
my pantry, taking stock of staples, and making a list of what I thought
I'd need for a long haul. Foolishly thinking it would be a good time
to eat right and get into better shape, I bought
lots of protein shakes and protein bars. If only.
A few months into the pandemic I realized why
it was called " Covid-19 " . Real food is comfort,
protein shakes, not so much.

asked me how I was doing with the pandemic,
their voices steeped in the concern one uses
when speaking to the bereaved. Initially, it made
me chuckle until it dawned on me that the
inability to dine with friends was like a death in
the family.

As the endless months of eating every meal at
home wore on, I found myself craving the food
of my childhood. I consoled myself by spending
a lot of time reading through my mother's and
grandmother's handwritten recipes, looking for
those carb-laden comfort dishes. Anyone need a
chocolate cake recipe? I found at
least 10.

We'll miss seeing family and

friends at the Christmas table.

Pasta with breaded veal or chicken became
go-to meals. The family-sized veal parmigiana
dinner from Salute Ristorante Italiano and chicken flautas with a side
of guacamole from La Abuela went into our regular rotation. Salads
gave way to fried chicken. Seriously, have you tried Redner's fried
chicken yet? It's worth risking licking your fingers when it's hot out of
the store bag.

Needing even more of a change, we started playing with our food.
Some experiments were more successful than others. My husband
perfected Belgium-style blueberry waffles. Move over pancakes, there's
