Opening Statement
Continued from page 5
Despite a severe drop in the Bar Association's income due to a
foreclosure moratorium that has dramatically reduced the number
of sheriff sales, the Association's financial position remains strong.
That's due largely to the prudent planning of our Investment
Committee. I am thankful that we have dedicated committee
members to help us remain on solid financial footing in these
uncertain times.
I just received the sad news of the passing of Barbara Kittrell,
who was the Executive Director when I joined the BCBA. Barb
was like no other. I joined the Bar Association, and I believe
many of my peers did as well, because Barb told us to. Barbara
served for 28 years as our Executive Director. She encouraged
the development of the pro bono program and two publications,
" Stepping Out " and " Older & Wiser, " that served as models for
other bar associations. In recognition of her work, she received the
2000 Leroy Hyman Award for outstanding service to the Berks
County Bar and the 2002 Pennsylvania Bar Association's Arthur J.
Birdsall Award. She was a wonderful person and we all extend our
sympathies to Barb's family.

I want to thank the wonderful Board of Directors that I was
privileged to serve with, especially those that will be leaving the
Board this year: Immediate Past-President Jeff Franklin, Secretary
Mike Weider, Treasurer Amy Good, Jeff Bukowski, Jennifer
Grimes, and Young Lawyers Section President Jordan Fegley.
Throughout these trying times, we were able to work together to
accomplish many things, and yet also managed to have some fun
along the way.
I am leaving you in wonderful hands, as I know Justin Bodor
will be a great leader. He is patient and kind, has a good head
on his shoulders, and a diplomatic streak that will serve this
Association well. Thank you again to our District Attorney John
Adams, for his understanding and patience while Justin carries out
his duties. Hopefully, we will be able to get back to normal soon so
that Justin will be able to preside over all of the events that make
our Association so special. Thank you again for this honor, and
even though I am very sad that my Presidency will be over soon, I
promise that the Secret Service won't have to escort me from the
Bar Building.

I am leaving the Bar Association in wonderful hands as I pass the President's gavel to Justin D. Bodor.
