"J," stand for "Jacob"? In the Genesis
account, does not Jacob's name become
"Israel"? Are not two distinct character
types evidenced in Roman J. Israel, and
does not the character speak of himself
in the film as both accuser/prosecutor
and defendant? Does not that character
prepare and present an indictment of
and to himself? By the film's conclusion,
the earlier persona seems to return as
Israel sees how terribly misguided he has
become. I would suggest that, at that
juncture, an attempt is made by Roman
J. Israel to be redeemed. Can he achieve
this? According to Paul's Letter to the
Romans, the answer appears to be in the
negative: "I will show mercy to whom
I will, I will take pity on whom I will."
(Romans 9:15)
Both films herein discussed concern
lawyers who fight for what is right and
true, who love their professional endeavors,
who practice law for the best and noblest
of reasons, and who know themselves.
After you watch these films, in a theatre
or at home, with or without popcorn-or
even if you choose not to see these films-
may I suggest certain questions seem to
be appropriate and relevant: Do you love
what you do? Are you passionate about
your life's calling? Are you making the
world a better place as a result of your
efforts? What if they made a movie about
you?
