of Bar's Home May Be His Greatest Legacy" - Spring
2014); Judge Elizabeth Ehrlich and Attorney Leon Ehrlich
("Remembering the Ehrlichs" - Fall 2014); Administrative
Law Judge Eugene F. Wisniewski ("A Sixty Year Career of
Public Service to the Profession and the Public" - Winter
2014) and the United States Supreme Court Admission
Ceremony Class of 1991 (Summer 2017 Issue).
Prominent in many of these articles are photographs
of the people, and objects, which are part of not only an
individual's life, but also our history as an Association. We
can see as we read these articles that indeed a picture "is
worth a thousand words." The article on Judge Endlich
contained a roster of the law faculty at Dickinson from the
late 1890s, when Judge Endlich was a Lecturer on "The
Law of Domestic Relations." Don Smith's tribute to Judge
Wisniewski contained photographs of the Judge's Navy ID
card from when he proudly served in uniform in the Pacific
Theater in WWII, and his campaign flyers from his 1959
campaign for District Attorney. The article on the Ehrlichs,
in addition to beautiful memories by friends and colleagues,
contained a treasure trove of images from the 1950s to the
1990s.
These objects and photographs are a part of our history
as a Bar Association, and we must preserve and take pride in
these items. They are the relics and artifacts of our history
as the Berks County Bar. It is fitting that when new lawyers
are introduced to our Bar Association (note, no longer
"admitted"), that they are given not only an engraved letter
opener, but also a copy of Judge Calvin E. Smith's A History
of Berks County's Bench, Bar, and Bar Association, published in
1981. Every November, the Bench and Bar welcome new
lawyers and wish all well in their upcoming and hopefully
long careers as a member of our Bar. By presenting our new
attorneys with a copy of Judge Smith's book, we send the
message that as you embark on your new career and look
ahead, remember and appreciate that you are joining an
institution with a distinguished history. Learn about it and
take pride in it. The book doesn't just recite our Bar history,
but it also contains the images, symbols, anecdotes, and
objects which shaped it.
