INFLUENZA VACCINATION
MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER
DURING THE PANDEMIC

A
s a family physician I recommend
the influenza vaccine to my
patients every influenza season
for a number of important reasons. The
influenza vaccine not only decreases the spread of the virus in our
community, it also decreases the potential for severe disease and
in turn decreases the potential for influenza-related deaths. This
year, given the coronavirus pandemic, mitigating the severity of the
spread of influenza is of increased urgency. Given the novelty of the
coronavirus, there is still much unknown about the consequences
or severity of dual infection with influenza and coronavirus, or
about the consequences of developing each infection in succession.
Both viruses have the potential to cause dangerous inflammation in
the lungs, so co-infection or infection in succession would be likely
to increase the severity of respiratory failure for patients as well as
increase the risk of requiring hospitalization.
There are lessons to be learned from our neighbors in the
southern hemisphere, who have already experienced their influenza
season. Key factors-including increased influenza vaccination
rates, social distancing, wearing masks and practicing proper
hand washing techniques-have led to a milder influenza season.
We have a chance to do the same as we move into our influenza
season. We have learned over the past many months that our
healthcare resources are not unlimited, so any steps we can take as
a community to keep influenza rates low will decrease the potential
burden on our community hospitals and our healthcare workers. If
you have not been vaccinated yet it is not too late. Speak with your
physician about vaccination and know that here in Berks County
we are doing everything we can to safely administer the vaccine,
including new hospital- and office-based drive-thru flu vaccine
clinics.
