Control of type 2 diabetes
among Hispanic/Latino
patients within the Reading
Hospital Family Health
Care Center and Provider
by Mary Ellen M. Travers, Michael Baxter, MD,
Department of Family and Community Medicine, Tower
Health Medical Group

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: All numerical patient data, figures, and
reports were provided by Gregory Harrison, LAT, ATC, Manager,
Payor Ambulatory Quality Programs, Tower Health Medical Group.
INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes mellitus has been found to be
more common in Hispanic/Latinos than non-Hispanic/Latino whites
due to many factors. This population of patients also faces multiple
barriers to the management of this chronic disease. These factors
proposed the hypothesis that Hispanic/Latino patients within the
Family Health Care Center (FHCC) at Reading Hospital had poorer
control (HbA1c values over 9.0) compared to non-Hispanic/Latino
patients within the FHCC. Healthcare provider perceptions were
also evaluated to see if they generally agreed or disagreed with the
hypothesis.
METHODS: A data report included patients within the FHCC
who were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at an encounter visit or
had type 2 diabetes listed on their problem list in a one-year time
period. The HbA1c values of the Hispanic/Latino patients and the
non-Hispanic/Latino patients were used to identify patients who had
their type 2 diabetes controlled (HbA1c under 9.0) or uncontrolled
(HbA1c over 9.0). Two surveys were given to healthcare providers.
The first survey was emailed to residents and physicians within the
FHCC with various general questions for an overview of providers
and their perceptions. The second survey was a paper survey
distributed to healthcare providers (residents, physicians, and nursing
staff) to compare perceptions of whether they agreed or disagreed
with the hypothesis. Comparisons were analyzed with chi-squared
calculations.
RESULTS: The data report showed that there was no statistical
significance between controlled and uncontrolled HbA1c values
for Hispanic/Latino patients versus non-Hispanic/Latino patients
(p>0.05) for the set criteria of patients with type 2 diabetes. The
emailed survey results showed that 95.65% of FHCC resident and
physicians believe that Hispanic/Latino patients' type 2 diabetes is
more difficult to manage as a provider due to various barriers. The
second survey results showed that the FHCC healthcare providers

believe that, in general, Hispanic/Latino patients have less control
over their type 2 diabetes than non-Hispanic/Latino patients (p =
0.043 < 0.05).
CONCLUSION: Although a significant amount of healthcare
providers were found to believe that in general, Hispanic/Latino
patients have poorer control over their type 2 diabetes than nonHispanic/Latino patients, there was no statistically significant
difference found between controlled versus uncontrolled HbA1c
values among Hispanic/Latino patients compared to non-Hispanic/
Latino patients from the data report criteria. Future studies may
want to expand the criteria used for the data report for a broader
analysis. Future studies may also want to identify the top barriers to
control of type 2 diabetes for all patients within the FHCC.
