are to be avoided. Patient and community health guidelines
must be obtained from reputable sources, e.g. the U.S. Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services, and the Pennsylvania Department of Health, as
well as such professional medical organizations as the Infectious
Disease Society of America, the American Academy of Pediatrics,
the American College of Physicians, and the American Academy of
Family Physicians.
2) Completion of a full course of one of the FDA approved
Covid-19 vaccines (Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, Johnson &
Johnson) has been shown to be the most effective means to
prevent serious disease, hospitalizations, and death from
Covid-19. These vaccines have been administered in 380 million
doses and have been shown to be both effective and safe. Therefore,
physicians have an ethical responsibility to provide factual
information regarding Covid-19 vaccines and to encourage all
eligible individuals (including themselves) to complete a full

3) Mitigation of Covid-19 spread can be enhanced through
well-described and successful public health measures e.g.
the wearing of masks particularly in indoor settings, social
distancing of 6 feet (except in some school settings where this
may be reduced to 3 feet) and frequent hand washing and
cleansing of particularly high touch surfaces with appropriate
cleansers. Every effort must be made to ensure that children receive
safe in-school instruction. Appropriate masking has been shown
to reduce disease spread and can be an effective measure to keep
children and school staff safe and keep schools open. There is
no reputable information that masking harms healthy children.
The American Academy of Pediatrics is on record of advocating for
masks for school children to keep them safe and keep schools open.

4) If a patient is ill, their physician should recommend they
stay home and have Covid-19 testing as appropriate. If the test is
positive, the patient should follow the guidelines for isolation and
family quarantining depending on such factors as vaccination status
and symptoms. All individuals should co-operate with case contact

As new information is available Covid-19 guidelines are subject
to change. Therefore, all physicians must remain vigilant and well
informed regarding new developments including Covid-19 variants,
vaccines, treatments, and public health measures. Together as well
