A kickoff event with a Grand Rounds presentation was held
at a general medical staff meeting in October. Guest speaker
Dr. Jon Shapiro, MD, from the Foundation of the Pennsylvania
Medical Society, spoke on "Addressing Physician Burnout
& Stress" to a very well attended and intrigued audience.
Attendees learned practical approaches and available resources
to recognize and address concerns with potential impairment
resulting from workplace burnout and stress. The results of the
assessment survey were also presented to the medical staff at this
time.
The above began the much needed conversation and
heightened awareness about the wellness of the physician/
provider, not only among clinicians, but also for hospital
administration, who recognize the importance of a healthy
medical staff. EAP continues to be a valuable resource for
PSHSJ employees, while administration and the committee
identify other strategies for increasing wellness.
The PSHSJ physician/provider wellness team, although in its
infancy, continues to brainstorm for future strategies, addressing
both organizational wellness and personal provider wellness.
Some ideas include a Provider Wellness Week, provider support
groups or Balint sessions, and a wellness retreat, to name a few.
A "Spotlight on Wellness" in the St. Joseph Medical Group
newsletter is in the works, highlighting a provider and his/her
definition of wellness, and a wellness/burnout prevention topic.
Also in consideration are regular town hall meetings between
the PSHSJ administration and clinicians for a continued
channel of communication on this matter. Supported by senior
administration, the group will become an official active hospital
committee, with updates at the General Medical Staff and NOC
(Network Operating Committee) meetings. The Physician/
Provider Wellness Initiative at PSHSJ hopes to foster a sense of
community and camaraderie among the PSHSJ medical staff
providers, with aims to reduce the feelings of isolation that can
occur with physician/provider burnout and eventually create
a culture of safety and awareness, continuing dialogue, and
organizational action regarding this very vital subject.
