photos for a single 'observation'. For instance, if trying to ID a tree,
take close-up photos of leaves, nuts/fruits/flowers, and bark before
submitting. The app has Artificial Intelligence that will attempt to
generate a list of likely identifications for you to choose from. If you
don't see your organism on the list, or the AI cannot suggest IDs, enter
a broad category such as 'insect' or 'plant'. Either way, a community
of volunteer scientists will review your observation and help with
identification. A similar process can be used at the iNaturalist website
on your computer. If you take a photo with more than one organism
you want to identify, such as a flower with a bee on it, submit the
photo as one observation with the flower label and then submit it a
second time labeled as insect.

Each observation with confirmed ID is categorized as either 'Casual' or
'Research Grade.' Any observation of an organism that was present at
the time and place you saw it because human beings put it there (think
of flowers or trees planted by people in a park or garden, or animals in
a zoo) will be placed in the 'Casual' category. While it is acceptable to
use iNaturalist to learn the names of captive/cultivated organisms, the
iNaturalist scientific community is primarily interested in observations
of wild/naturalized organisms ("organisms that exist in particular times
and places because they intended to do so (or because of the intention
of another wild organism")". This distinction is VERY important, so
when entering a new observation always mark it as 'captive/cultivated'
unless you are confident the organism was not planted/placed there by
people. Be sure to review the information in the "Help" section of the
app or website before using this app!

TICKS
Anyone spending time outside in Berks County (or almost anywhere!)
should educate themselves about strategies for minimizing the risk of
contracting tick-borne diseases such as Lyme disease.
Smartphone app: Ticktracker This free app is designed to enable
people to track and report encounters with ticks and to provide
education regarding the nature of Lyme disease, how to reduce your
risk-and that of your pets-, and what to do if you or your pet is
bitten by a tick. In one section of the app titled 'Testing and Labs'
you can find out how to submit any tick you encounter to Drexel
University's College of Medicine's Center for Advanced Microbial
Processing. Importantly, ticks sent to Drexel are processed for research
purposes only so the sender will not receive test results. Not all ticks
carry Lyme or other disease, so anyone who has had to remove a tick
from their body should consider sending the tick for free testing to the
Pennsylvania Tick Research Lab (run by East Stroudsburg University).
