Reflections on a Career
in Health Administration
JOHN R. MORAHAN, PRESIDENT
P E N N S TAT E H E A LT H S T. J O S E P H
What motivated you
to pursue a career in
healthcare administration?
In my youth, I was motivated,
as I am today, on advancing the
common good. I was exposed to
health care during my Pitt University
days as I had a part-time audiovisual
job at their School of Medicine
and, post-college, worked in their
Cardiology Department providing
support to research studies. At this
point, I became very interested in
health administration and health
policy, specifically the workings of hospitals and the health system
and pursued my graduate education.

How has the reality of your career differed
from your initial expectations?
My early career was forged during the time of a national health
insurance debate and federal monies appropriated to developing
Health Maintenance Organizations, a/k/a managed care. I realized
after spending a couple of years developing these health plans, that
it was critical for the health plan's success to being directly involved
and integrated with the providers - physicians and hospitals - in
order to have an effective delivery and payment system. I therefore
moved over to the delivery side by taking a position in strategy
with what is today UPMC. In the last 20 years changes in federal
and state regulations, increasing costs of labor, the evolution in
technology and medications, the process improvements hospitals
have implemented to become more efficient, and physician
employment by health systems, have all significantly changed the
way we approach health care as a business. So perhaps the biggest
challenge is staying on top of all of these things in such a way to
ensure that your health organization remains both competitive and
viable while making meaningful contributions to the health of the
community.

What aspects of your career have proved to be
the most rewarding?
I've always been committed to faith-based, Catholic healthcare.
And while the number of organizations that have Catholic

sponsorship has dwindled, it has been a passion of mine to ensure
that we maintain that identity. I do believe it is a real differentiator,
and receiving care from a faith-based system leads to a more
holistic patient experience. We treat the whole person, especially
those most vulnerable in our society. I know this, because I hear
from patients about what this means to them. That's one of the
most rewarding things, as is working with employees and the
medical staff in making it happen. Clearly, having been in the role
at St. Joe's for 20 years, and leading a team that has transformed
St. Joe's to prepare it to remain competitive in the 21st-century,
has also been our focus. Further, ensuring that we keep a deep
commitment to the City of Reading by providing the services most
needed by the residents of the city, right in center city, has also
been deeply rewarding.

For someone pursuing a similar career today
what advice would you give?
Success in any business means knowing your field of interest
and committing to staying at the forefront of what is occurring
in your industry by continuously maintaining and building
your skill set. It is also realizing that so much of your success is
harnessing the power of the people who work for and with you,
and not giving up. There are so many opportunities to throw up
your hands and say this is too hard, but in the end, like anything
in life, you have to want to be successful, and then you have to
make every effort to collaborate with people to achieve those goals.
Having good and supportive mentors and superiors is also key.
My advice would be that healthcare is a dynamic ever-changing
environment. That alone is exciting. If you have a passion for
changing people's lives for the better, watching medical miracles
occur and being a part of those miracles, and enjoy working and
collaborating with diverse teams and highly intelligent human
beings, otherwise known as physicians, health care is the career for
you! One needs to have a strong analytic base and possess strategic
and financial skills along with understanding one's own and other's
emotional intelligence. There is no magic pill or sudden revelation
to success. Rather, it is day in and day out grinding away, doing
the right things, having the hard conversations, making the
difficult decisions and executing upon those decisions. Finally, by
trusting that in the end by doing all that work and working with
people and harnessing their diverse talents toward achieving the
goals and objectives of the organization, success will come.
