Berks County Medical Society Medical Record Spring 2020 - 7

Now I realize that this scenario drastically oversimplifies the
issue. And to truly do this piece justice I should start off down the
complex and controversial path of why we do not vote. I could begin
by referencing hot button issues like campaign finance reform, voter
identification laws, and allegations of voter suppression. Then I'd
follow up with a pithy discussion of negative attack ads, the electoral
college, and mass media bias (just to get your blood pressure to
a point where a cardiologist should be present). And for my big
finale I would verbally suplex you with hanging chads, Cambridge
Analytica, and gerrymandering. But by then your heads would
explode and none of you would like me or-even worse-read the
rest of this article.
The fact is there is plenty to not like about how we vote, and
we may not always like who we are voting for. Campaigns can be
divisive, mean spirited and downright ugly. It's easy to see why
potential voters might have a little fatigue or apathy once its election
day. Also, let's be honest, our founding fathers could have picked a
more conducive date and time of year. I mean, November is COLD,
and who has ever scheduled such a major event on a Tuesday??!
Now with all that being said, let me make a drastic shift from
talking to a first grader to addressing fully grown health care
professionals. I have sat in many public health meetings where I have
heard every kind of practitioner rightfully grumble that if a patient
would have simply taken the time to do X then Y would have never
happened. I have heard the adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a
pound of cure" so often I think I might get it tattooed! If only more
physicians would take the time and make the effort to be politically
active, more of the legislation that intrudes on the practice of
medicine could be prevented and there would be no need for 'cures'

in the form of lawsuits and lobbying for alterations in the law.
So here is my public service announcement: "OUR ELECTION
SYSTEM IS SICK." There are two sources of medication to treat
what ails it: appropriate action by elected officials or improved
participation by voters. Increased voter participation-especially by
physicians and other health care professionals-is the key to both.
I single out physicians because at no other time in United
States history have health and politics been so closely tied together.
Choosing to sit out an election can and will directly affect your
practice and your patients. Physicians need to adapt and become
as active in our political system as our government is in our health
system. We need to continue to vigorously educate the public on
best health care practices and work with our elected officials on all
the legislation and policies affecting medicine. Above all, we need to
be aware of who our politicians are and where they stand on issues
and, of course, VOTE!
In 2020 we face an especially important choice for our country,
and it is vital that medicine and your views are taken into account
when we head to the polls. That is another reason why organized
medicine and membership in County and State Medical Societies is
so important. We have the knowledge of the legislative process and
the necessary relationships with government officials that allow us to
keep you informed while you continue to do your important work.
If you need more information on this year's candidates or want to
lend a hand in the fight to defend organized medicine and your right
to practice, please contact your county society or visit PAMed's laws
and advocacy page at pamedsoc.org.
