We have just worked through a year on the front lines of health
care that we never could have imagined. Vaccines are the start
of the light at the end of the tunnel. Hope. We searched for
vaccines for our amazing Reading Pediatric staff, who worked
selflessly to take care of over 60,000 patient care visits during
this pandemic. And like everyone else on the front lines we
all worried about our safety and the safety of our families,
all while knowing that we were putting ourselves at risk. We
advocated and made numerous phone calls to obtain Moderna
vaccine for our staff. We were sent extra doses, and because of
the hope they provide and the lives they save we kept giving out
vaccines as long as the DOH would send them to us. Everyone
at Reading Pediatrics felt grateful that we all still had jobs and
that we all stayed relatively well during these pandemic times.
From that gratitude, our vaccine clinics came to be. We asked
for volunteers and our staff stepped up and gave many days
off to help get shots in arms, which is the best way to stop this
pandemic and crush Covid 19! We felt honored to be able to
participate and were fortunate to be able to quickly vaccinate
1700 members of our community (first and second doses)
who included high risk elderly, high risk teachers, police, fire
fighters, people with high risk conditions, as well as other
health care providers. Watching my colleagues vaccinate
people was nothing short of inspirational. This was the best way
we could find to serve our community and we tried to do as
much as we could to stem the tide of this virus.
On 12/1/20 I received an email from my employer, asking if any
out-patient docs would work as in-patient docs as they were getting
stretched too thin. I'm old enough not to have little kids and young
enough not to have medical issues..... if not me, then who? A week
later, another email....congratulations on your emergency hospital
privileges. I hadn't done hospital medicine in 14 years........ let that
sink in! I had great mentors and worked hard (even got to do 2
thoracentesis!). I would do anything to help get rid of COVID that
has taken so much from so many.
