equally talented and handsome Executive Director one hundred
years from now will research our history and put Mike's name
next to Dr. Wenrich and the other Presidents that led during
extraordinary times in our history.
But, if we are honest, that would be incomplete. Our future
colleagues deserve more than just a name. They need to know
about all of his achievements.
Over the past two years under Dr. Haas, our Society has
undergone essential and significant changes. We shifted from
a brick-and-mortar office to a virtual one; that not only gives
us a stronger financial outlook but allows an agile approach for
addressing our members' needs. Our Society has embraced a
new social media and digital strategy to better facilitate dialogue
with and add value for our members. We expanded our role
in educating and collaborating with community leaders and
organizations, most notably in promoting best health practices
during the pandemic and advocating for the creation of a Berks
County Department of Health.

All of this was achieved under the guidance of Dr. Haas, our
Chair Dr. Kristen Sandel, and our extremely dedicated Executive
Council. During a pandemic that has crippled so many businesses
and organizations, we not only survived-in many ways we
thrived.
Sadly, the pandemic has given Dr. Haas " The Bulletin
treatment. " There was no prepared speech given or plaque received
at the close of his presidency. There was no Breakfast Club moment
where a 1980's version of Dr. Haas walked proudly across the high
school football field with his fist victoriously up in the air. There
was just a heartfelt 'Thank You' from the Executive Council and a
humble passing of the baton to the next President, over Zoom.

I, for one, personally and professionally feel he deserves a little
bit more. As does our new President, Jillian Ventuzelo, who is the
youngest president in our Society's history and who will also have
to lead in the era of the " post-pandemic. "
So in the Fall, when our Society and our Country deem it safe,
we will all get together and toast Dr. Haas, the BCMS, and every
one of our great members, who will have endured so much during
COVID-19 (event time and location to be named later).

In the meantime, if you see Dr. Haas in the hallways say to
your colleague, " There goes Mike! He was President during the
COVID-19 pandemic ...and he lowered our dues, helped establish
our new social media strategy, strengthened our advocacy efforts,
approved the switch to a virtual office, ... "
On behalf of the BCMS membership and our entire
Community, I say, " THANK YOU Dr. Haas for two years of
outstanding leadership. " It is a legacy that Dr. Wenrich and very
few others can truly appreciate.
