curing and fixing. Historically, the role
of physician was akin to a healer. As
medicine advanced, we were actually
able to cure some conditions. Somehow
though, through the years, the focus
shifted from "healing" to "curing."
My concern is that when "curing" is
the end point of medicine, at some
point we inevitably will fail every
patient as death is inevitable. While I
wholeheartedly support the curative
intent of medicine and am tremendously
grateful for the care that my colleagues
are able to provide, we do need to shift
the pendulum back to the realm of the
physician being a healer. In an ideal
world, a physician would be a healer and
curer. If we can help patients transcend
from their suffering, if we can provide
empathetic listening and support them
in their greatest time of need, we can
help them heal emotionally in those
times where we cannot physically cure
them. I am not a big fan of quotes but
the one that sits on my door is, "To cure
sometimes, treat often, but comfort
always."
Are you involved in any nonprofit/
community groups at this time?
I just moved here about 2.5 years
ago and am finally immersed in the
area. I recently joined the Circle of
Life Coalition but I'm not sure I'm
comfortable mentioning that because
I haven't played a big role just yet in
it. My hope in the future though is
to play an active role in the hospice
house that is being built. I have thus far
been primarily focused on increasing
community awareness and engagement
in advance care planning.
Please tell us a little about your family
and the activities you enjoy outside of
work.
I have two amazing children and
fabulous in-laws who just moved here
two weeks ago. Much of my time
revolves around my children and their
daily whims: baking, painting, doing
puzzles, going to the park. I enjoy eating
chocolate, running, and am just learning
how to play the piano. If there is a need

improving quality of life. When you are
being cared for by a palliative specialist, you
may still continue all types of aggressive
care. It is not the same as hospice in which
you forgo aggressive care (people confuse the
two on a daily basis).
