his family from threatened harm. For all
of the good that has been accomplished,
future historians will no doubt also seek to
understand what went wrong.
So where do we go from here? Indeed,
the COVID-19 Pandemic is not over.
There is much work to be done locally
and certainly through international
efforts to bring vaccines to everyone and
end this Pandemic once and for all. As
physicians we must embrace our teacher/
healer roles as strong advocates for the
vaccines for every patient since it has
been shown that the voice of a health
care worker is one of the most important
factors in overcoming vaccine hesitancy
and resistance. It is also time to see that all
eligible adolescents receive a COVID-19
vaccine as recommended by Dr. Jamie
Chmielowski in her article " COVID-19
Vaccine for Adolescents " in this edition
of MR. As the vaccines become approved
for children less than 12, this will also be a
group demanding our attention especially
as schools resume full in-person schedules
this Fall.
In addition, we know that
this is not the first nor will it be the last
pandemic that strikes mankind. We were
unprepared for this assault. We cannot
allow that to happen again. Public Health
cannot be an afterthought but must be a
priority with resources committed from
the very highest levels of our nation to our
basic local community needs. This is also
important as we address the health care
disparaties laid bare by the impact of this
disease.
We can truly be proud of our efforts
of the past eighteen months. However,
our work is not over, and this is not the
time to " throw in the towel. " We cannot
be satisfied with less than the vaccination
goal (70%-80%) that will reach " herd
immunity " and protect everyone in our
community. Let us carry on with renewed
