President's Message

The feedback from participants in the program has been very favorable and I
personally greatly enjoyed the experience. Overall, I took away several key points
that I believe are valuable. First, politicians not only welcome but genuinely need
physician input in healthcare policy. By their own admission, they are not doctors
and do not have medical training, and often look for guidance when faced with
medical issues. I perceive that there is a desire for more personal interaction with
physicians to address the difficult issues that affect our profession. Second, despite
a sense of helplessness when faced with the growing number of healthcare rules and
regulations, physicians have a tremendous amount of political power. This influence
does not always require membership in a high-profile political action organization,
but can even occur over a cup of coffee with a local representative or a simple faceto-face conversation during a town meeting. Lastly, we should expect the political
process to move slowly. It is understandable to be frustrated when well-intentioned
bills and policies move sluggishly through the administrative machine; however, in
a sense, this slow process can be protective, allowing appropriate scrutiny to avoid
unintended and potentially costly consequences from poorly planned policies.
I hope this program will continue in the future, as I believe it prepares physicians
to answer the "call to arms" as the healthcare battle wages on. In planning future
sessions, I would like to expand the availability of the program to physicians unable
to attend this year's academy. This may involve alternative venues or time slots.
Certainly, I welcome the on-going involvement of Kutztown University and again
thank them for their outstanding work in helping to make this year's program a
success. I also want to thank the first cohort of physicians who attended our sessions
and hope that the experience was valuable.
