number, not only on the health of those individuals and families
but also on the health of the rest of us and the economic and social
well-being of our entire community?
In this edition of the Medical Record we explore this question
and recognize those physicians, nurses and other dedicated health
workers who give their time and talents to addressing the needs
of the uninsured and underinsured (insurance providing limited
options for care). Many of these individuals find it hard to access
care even when it is available, due to social factors - e.g. mental
health issues, substance abuse problems, immigration status,
homelessness, and overt poverty - all issues which are deeply
rooted in our local community. The efforts to address the needs
of this population through the Western Berks Free Medical Clinic,
FaithCare volunteers, the Tower Health Street Medicine Program
and our local Emergency Departments, which too often become the
"primary care providers of last resort," are highlighted here. We
also share an update from the staff of the Berks Community Health
Center, which continues to grow and serve the community well
with the recent addition of its fourth health center. Certainly many
others in medical practices/clinics/residency programs throughout
our health systems are also dedicated to providing care to a very
diverse and in-need population. We celebrate our achievements,
but of course there is always more work to do and additional
volunteers needed. Thanks to the work of these colleagues and
friends the goal of "health care for everyone" in Berks County is
closer today than ever before and remains a vision to guide us and
our community partners in our efforts to create a truly healthier
Berks County community.

We have worked with patients and physicians in the
diagnosis and treatment of gum disease and its relationship
to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and
pre-term low weight births during pregnancy. We have
provided dental consultation and therapy for snoring,
jaw pain, headaches, and insomnia in association with TMJ
Dysfunction and/or Sleep Apnea. We have introduced Cranial
Sacral Therapy as part of a larger focus on craniofacial pain.
And, we continue to serve clients with general dentistry and
orthodontic services, promoting general health and wellness.
