our administrative council, in large part due to a dwindling
influx of new and active members. The future of the Berks
County Medical Society depends not only on the continued
involvement of our proven leaders, but also on the input
of new members, bringing new perspectives and new ideas
to our challenging and ever-changing health care world. To
achieve this, we need to look at the concerns of our emerging
For example, younger generations of physicians often
are looking for a more balanced work/life schedule. With
electronic medical records, email, and meetings, the work day
never seems to end. With the efforts of the Medical Society, we
can work to reduce physician "burn out" and physician turnover through opportunities that foster physician wellness and a
better work/life balance.
New physicians may also feel that the world of healthcare
policy is too time-consuming, complex, and foreign to
anything they have dealt with before. Medical practice itself
is more than a full time job. In my experience with our
organization, policy makers and legislators are genuinely
interested in our opinions. I believe that the Berks County
Medical Society can raise awareness and understanding about
how our society fits into the bigger political picture. Physicians
are more likely to be involved with political matters if they
have a better understanding of how the process works.
Another option for improving physician satisfaction
and promoting involvement is through mentoring newer
physicians. Several here today have been mentors to countless
physicians in our area including myself. Our members offer an
undeniable wealth of experience in medicine and in health care
The Medical Society, through ongoing physician
collegiality, gives our physicians the opportunity to get
together socially. Often, the best ideas come when the beepers
and cellphones are quiet. In particular, primary care physicians
and specialists rarely get the opportunity to meet face-to-face
and share their concerns and review common patients.
Also, in order to sustain our multiple events, publications,
and popular community programs such as HealthTalk,
Resident's Day, and the Medical Record so that future
generations of patients and providers can enjoy them, we will
continue to improve the financial standing of our BCMS.
Already, through sponsorship with our local health systems and
businesses, our executive committee has been able to create a
more favorable fiscal outlook.
These are just a few of many issues we face, and clearly we
can't address these on our own. The relevance in our Society lies in
the strength, experience, and values of its members. I have always
been impressed by the commitment and compassion of our local
physicians. Our docs know the needs of our patients and give their
time generously to make a difference. They truly lead by example.
We need the participation of all our members in continuing
our traditions. Where there are challenges, there are also
opportunities. Once again, I want to thank everyone for attending
today's event and I look forward to working with the physicians
of our community, our Medical Society leadership, and our
community leaders in assisting our doctors in continuing to
provide excellent medical care to the patients of Berks county and
beyond. Thank you.
