When Senator Dinniman
and the Historic Society
honored me and started a
fellowship in my name he was
there and was one of the first to
contribute. When he wrote his
book The Mouth that Roared,
he brought me the book with
a personalized inscription. I
can go on with how loving
and at the same time respectful
he was. Never complaining
when he had to wait to see me.
He was always friendly and
kind to my staff, frequently
inquiring about their welfare and treating them as equals. Despite
his gregarious personality he was the humblest of people; one
time I had him and Dick Lucas (a member of the Eagles 1960
championship team) in my office and these huge big men were
having the time of their lives talking about the past. We took a
picture and I looked like a shrimp between the two of them.
He had a magnetic and handsome personality and even in his
sixties and seventies created a stir whenever he showed up.
Despite his medical issues he was always dynamic and positive.
The only thing that ever bothered him was when the Phillies were
not doing well. Even when he was not well he wanted to go and
help.
Then came that fatal day on the 11th of January, 2011 in
Tucson, Arizona when his granddaughter
Christina Taylor Green, a beautiful
young lady, was shot dead by the same
person who shot Congresswoman
Gabrielle Gifford. I called him and spoke
to him and the anguish in his voice when
he said "We lost her, Doc" was palpable.
When I saw him next he was still not
himself. He always called me Doc, never
Mian or Dr. Jan. We chatted about
Christina and even in his tragedy he still
asked about my wife, Amber, who he was
very fond of.
Dallas was one of a kind. God threw away the mold after
making him. I will miss him, his booming voice, his loving and
caring personality; I was blessed to have known him.
I know that his love for Sylvia was eternal and their love for
each other a lesson for all the breakups and drama we see in the
celebrity world. One thing I know for sure is that he will be
welcomed into heaven with open arms and I hope Christina is the
first one to greet the great man.

Dallas Green, Dr. Jan, Dick Lucas

May the road rise up to meet you,
may the wind be ever at your back.
May the sunshine warm upon your face,
and the rain fall softly on your fields.
And until we meet again,
may God hold you in the hollow of his hand.
An Irish prayer

Dallas Green's Granddaughter,
Christina Taylor Green.

Mian A. Jan, M.D., is a practicing
Cardiologist and the President of
Chester County Medical Society.
