you never miss an opportunity to vaccinate, sharing how your family
has been vaccinated, and learning how to answer some of parents'
most common questions about HPV vaccine, especially regarding
syncope and seizures after vaccination. Suggested key talking points
for parents' education consist of: HPV is very common ~ 80% of people
will get an HPV infection in their lifetime, If our immune system cannot
clear the HPV and the infection persists, this could result in cancer (HPV
causes about 33,737 cancers each year), and vaccines early in life are
our best prevention against HPV infection and related cancers. Online
examples of responses to parents' questions about HPV are available
at: CDC https://www.cdc.gov/hpv/hcp/for-hcp-tipsheet-hpv.pdf and
Team Maureen https://teammaureen.org/.
In Chester County if the vaccine is not available through a
primary medical provider, only 18 years of age and older can receive
HPV vaccine through pharmacies, younger children/teens with
private insurance must go through urgent care i.e. Rite-Aid Ready
Clinic/CVS Minute Clinic where the CNP or PA orders the vaccine
and is given as part of a prevention clinic visit, children with Child
Health Insurance of PA (CHIP) must receive HPV vaccines at their
physicians office, and uninsured/underinsured children/adults can
receive vaccines through Chester County Health Department clinics
at no cost.12
The tenacity of the HPV to survive, diversity of HPV strains, lack
of a cure for HPV infection, and inability of our immune system to
eradicate all HPV infections, poses a formidable risk for new cases of
HPV cancers. Vaccines given early in life and not excluding those
who are already infected may result in the most effective primary and
secondary
prevention of HPV-cancers.
