The Art of Chester County
wood artist
Robert Snyder

or the past four years each issue of Chester County Medicine
has featured a Chester County artist. Most have been
fine art painters or sculptors. The Chester County art
community, however, fields a broad range of "artists" including
painters, sculptors, photographers, ceramicists and glassblowers to
name a few.

Examples of the table legs, each individually crafted on Bob's
giant wood lathe.

20 CHESTER COUNT Y Medicine | SPRING 2019

Our Spring edition will feature a wood artist. Yes, we may
know them as furniture or cabinet makers, or even carpenters,
but Chester County has and has had more than its share of
woodworker craftsmen. A very partial list includes the likes
of Amos Darlington, Marshall Britton, Howard Hull, Arbury
Barnard, and Robert Korbonits. All are artists using wood as a
medium (of note the Chester County Historical Society has a
wonderful collection of original Chester County furniture and
a visit there should be on your must-do list). Just as with fine
art painters with their choice of oil, acrylic, water color, pencil,
chalk, etc., along with their many choices of paper, fabric, canvas
and the use of their personal technical skills using perspective,
color, shapes and lighting, so it is with a wood artist. They can
choose hardwoods, softwoods, green or aged. Periods: Federal,
Renaissance, Colonial, Modern. And again what genre - Shaker,
Nakashima, Green and Green, primitive, Nordic, or a hybrid
of several. Then there is the technique of joinery (binding two
pieces of wood together), such as dove tail, mortise and tenon,
nails or glue. Finally, as any woodworker knows, it is the finish
on the wood that is an art to itself. There is oil, varnish, wax,
stain, paint, shellac and the list goes on.
