eorge is widowed and his only daughter lives in
California. He wants to stay in his home but because
he has difficulty getting around he is having trouble
keeping appointments, doing maintenance, and cooking
for himself. During her last visit, his daughter noticed his
refrigerator was almost empty, there were expired medications
on the counter and the yard and home needed work. George
admitted that, although he used to be very social, he rarely spent
times with others these days. A neighbor took him to doctors'
appointments and picked up groceries but he hated to take
advantage of the kindness too often.
George's story is not uncommon. Researchers have found that
social isolation among seniors contributes to higher morbidity
and mortality rates. A study by researchers from the AARP Public
Policy Institute, Stanford University, and Harvard found that
Medicare spends an estimated $6.7 billion more each year on
seniors who have little social contact with others.
George's daughter realized that her father needed assistance.
She brought him for a tour and lunch at Surrey Services for
Seniors in Devon. In addition to transportation, programs,
exercise classes and nutritious lunches Surrey offers a wide variety
of supportive services that help older adults remain in their
homes.
George and his daughter were impressed with all the
offerings. Working with Surrey, they set up daily transportation
from George's house to the center. He enjoyed spending
time with others in popular programs such as Current Events
Discussion Group, Classical Music and Watercolor Painting.
George also participated in exercise classes that helped him feel
