continuing medical education or profiling-with-feedback, which
have been found to be poorly effective means of influencing drug
choices.1
With spring upon us, clinicians are evaluating best ways to
reconnect with patients that may have avoided care, managing
new or recurring substance use disorders and juggling the critical
balance of providing effective pain management for chronic pain
conditions in a post pandemic world. Once again clinicians will
be challenged with managing their time and the need for sound
clinical resources. Recognizing that the need for academic detailing
remains, and has increased, the Pennsylvania Department of
Health as part of the state's Overdose Data to Action (OD2A)
program has invested in an academic detailing initiative focused
on providing healthcare practitioners with the latest evidencebased information on what works when trying to manage acute
pain, non-cancer related chronic pain, and identifying and
managing patients with opioid use disorder. Local educators have
been assigned to visit prescribers and their support teams in their
offices or virtually. Your academic detailer will provide you with
a concise summary of the most current information on what
1

works and what doesn't, to help you better care for your chronic
pain and opioid-seeking patients. They will also present you with
a clinically relevant review of the most recent research on pain
management, guidelines based on the latest Medicare, state, and
CDC recommendations, and local materials that cover nondrug interventions as well as links to state-funded substance use
treatment services you can give to your patients to help enlist their
involvement in better care.
As we begin to engage with pent-up patient needs and past
challenges in a new landscape, it will be critical to work optimally
to provide the best possible care. Academic detailing can play a
key role in providing the timely education to support this goal
and we think this will be an innovative and effective way to help
front-line physicians deal with managing the need for actionable
information while supporting patients care in practical ways.
When an educator contacts your office, we encourage you to
take the opportunity to meet with them. If you'd like to book a
visit directly, please contact Paul Fanikos, Alosa's Chief Operating
Officer, at pfanikos@AlosaHealth.org.
